The National Football League continues to deliver surprises as upsets were plentiful this weekend. The San Francisco 49's stunned the L.A. Rams Monday evening 16-0 to take command in the NFC West with a 4-1 record. The Dallas Cowboys continued to cruise along and remain the only NFL team with a perfect record as they defeated the New York Giants, 24-14. Don Cockrpft kicked four field goals to lift Cleveland and an upset over Pittsburgh. The defeat dropped the defending NFL champions to 1-4 and last place in the AFC Central, three games behind leaders Houston and Cincinnati; Houston thwarted the Denver Broncos 17-3 as the Bengals shut out Tampa Bay 21-0. Minnesota remained unbeaten, as the Vikings squeaked through in their NFC Central first-place battle with Chicago, beating the Bears 20-19. The Bears could have won it but placekicker Bob Thomas had one extra point blocked and missed another one in the second half. 2 The Kansas City Chiefs stunned the Washington f RSStftathq BMifckcx.lHyW4te3iateirin $ 36-yard touchdown to lift the Chiefs to a 33-30 victory over the Redskins. In Detroit, Greg Landy fired three touchdown passes and led the Lions to an upset over the red-hot New England Patriots. Former BYU coach Tommy Hudspeth made his pro coaching debut as the Lions routed the Patriots, 30-10. The St. Louis Cardinals won for the fourth time in 1 five games as the Cards whipped the Philadelphia i Eagles 33-14. It was a bad weekend for quarterbacks as more handfull were injured. I Terry Bradshaw was knocked out of the Cleveland game in the fourth quarter. He was feared to have a neck injury but x-rays showed no broken bones. Bob Griese of the Miami Dolphins was injured as the Baltimore Colts defeated Miami 28-14. . The Atlanta Falcons were crushed by New Orleans 30-0 and lost Steve Bartkowski for most of the season with a knee injury. Joe Namath pulled a calf muscle as the bewildered Jets surprised the Buffalo Bills 17-14. Key match-up this weekend will be the Dallas-St. . Louis game. Hocky " The Salt Lake Golden Eagles quickly avenged their season-opener loss to the- Kansas City Blues by , thrashing the Blues 5-J in a penalty-infested hockey game. Rookies Vera Stenlund and Mike Fidler, with two and one goals respectively, led the Eagles to j the first, victory of the season. Miners Downed Despite Solid First Half On Defense Rebounding from a disappointing dis-appointing 80 homecoming defeat to Dugway, the Park High Miners found no relief from their pounding schedule Wednesday afternoon when they were bounced on their home turf by a powerful and top-ranked North Summit -team 380. Defense Taking up where they left off against Dugway, the tough and stingy Miner defense held North Summit to just eight points in the first half. After intermission the size and depth of the opposition began to take its toll as the Braves went on the war path , for 30 points. Compared to their first encounter with their Coalville Coal-ville neighbors when they were' . ' trounced 55zip, the Miners showed a marked improvement in the face of less than optimistic odds. . Mr. Jenson worked for Park West two seasons ago as director; he returns to the area from teaching duties at the Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus where he is an Associate Professor of English: He holds a PhD from the University of Utah. Jenson brings some years of Skiing experience with him to Park West. He began skiing at the age of four at the Sinks in Logan Camyon, Utah where his father helped operate, a cable tow lift. Jenson was Director of the Beaver Mountain Ski School, and was a supervisor at Badger Pass, Yosemite and Brian Head Ski School, Cedar City, Utah. School TRAVEL & TOURS X-C Skiers Gathor At Tolomark, Wise, Many of the world's finest cross-country ski racers will gather at the Telemark in Northern Wisconsin in late December for the first World Cup cross-country ski race ever held outside of Europe. The World Cup nordic program is administered by a ' commission of European journalists who establish the 'competitive schedule and scoring system. Not only will the skiers take part in the World Cup race, but they will also help kick off the First Annual Tele-mark Tele-mark Games. The Telemark Ski Area and Lodge have become widely acclaimed for their race organization and hospitality following the hosting of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Cross-Country, Skiing Ski-ing Tryouts. It is expected that the Telemark Games will become an annual Winter event at the Lodge and will include a 15 kilometer race and a 3x10 relay event. The relay is slated for December 21, with Goose Season Opens Saturday, October 9, marked mark-ed the opening of the 1976 goose hunting season in Utah. The season lasts until December 19, 1976. Clair Jensen, Utah Wildlife Resources waterfowl biologist, bio-logist, indicated that the people who are willing to spend some time planning their goose bunt should have an excellent hunt this year. "We have lots of geese. The hunters who are willing to watch the birds for a day or so to establish which feeding areas are being used should have successful hunts," Jensen Jen-sen said. He added that geese will typically use the same feeding area for two or three days at a time. Bag limit for geese this year is five either daily or in possession. The limit may include not more than one Ross's goose or more than three snow geese, or more than two birds of dark species(the common Canada and subspecies), white-fronted, tule, blue and emperor Special restrictions apply to several areas. In Daggett and Uintah counties geese may be taken on from November 6, 1976, through December 12, 1976. The bag and possession limit is one Canada goose. In Washington Washing-ton County geese may be taken only from October 23, 1976 through January 2, 1977. Goose hunting is prohibited on Fish Springs and Ouray National Wildlife Refuges during the entire 1976-77 waterfowl season. Telemark Lodge owner and race promoter Tony Wise said that he is confident of assembling the strongest field of international crosscountry cross-country racers ever to compete in North America. . Wise also indicated that Olympic Silver Medalist Bill Koch and the entire United States Team have stated that they will be in attend-ence attend-ence for the World Cup competition. Wise added that with the outstanding facilities- the Lodge has to offer the ski racers that all, the athletes involved in the two day affair will, enjoy a first-rate competition. Convention facilities have been expanded and indoor tennis courts and an ice skating rink have been completed. A new snow loading and snow unloading lift, replacing replac-ing the Albion lift, at Alta which will be easier for beginning skiers to board. A new Golden Spike Empire economy package, featuring Snow Basin and Powder Mountain, 17 and 19 miles northeast of Ogden. Both are within 50 miles of Salt Lake City. - . ; New Condominium projects at Alta, Park City and Mt. Holly. Newly-cut trails at Powder Mountain, Sundance, Beaver Mountain, Brian Head, Brighton and Park West. Beginning in November, Brighton, Alta and Snowbird will be served by the Utah Transit Authority, operating on a regular schedule from bus stops in downtown Salt Lake City. Lewis Brothers Stages will continue to operate regular schedules from the airport to Park City and Park West and the shuttle bus service in Park City and between Alta and Snowbird has been improved. ' Strength and flexibility in all parts of the lower body are important for skiing. The feet, ankles, knees, and thighs must be properly conditioned con-ditioned if they are to perform efficiently. EXERCISE FOR THE LEGS 1) Run alternately between sprinting and jogging. Run taking short steps. Run lifting the knees high. Run kicking heels up to seat. Walk on very steep and uneven terrain. 2) Run down stairs or mountain trails or slopes. 3) Step on and off a bench 15 to 20 inches high. 4) Hop over a bar or bench sideways 10 to 12 inches high. Practice this exercise with feet together, feet apart, or jumpingfrom one foot to the next. 5) Place tires about eight feet apart and alter-them alter-them in two lines. Jump from one to the other landing just with the outside foot and then pushing off onto the next tire, etc. Also do this exercise by jumping with both feet from one time to the next. , 6) Jump on toes bounce short distances alternate with high jump or bounce with a tuck. 7) Skip rorje is a good exercise for both breathing and feet and ankles. A ski racer carry a skip rope during all seasons of the year since it enables a vigorous workout even in a limited space. - 8) Bicycling is good for all parts of the leg but especially the thigh.
