Last Friday night in commencement ceremonies at the College of Eastern Utah a former Helper man, the late Frank Bonacci was accorded posthumously, an honorary associate in arts degree. y - Mr. Bonacci served in the Utah State the bill that created Legislature, Carbon College, the predessesor of CEU, and from a sick bed in a hospital, was one of the first to sign the referendum petition that saved the college from the doom that former Gov. J. Bracken Lee had decreed for the Carbon institution. For Helper and the north Carbon area the name of Frank Bonacci holds a special meaning, particularly for those who are getting along in years after spending a life time in the bowels of the earth mining coal. Frank Bonacci was a union organizer at a time when entering a mining camp for this purpose meant stepping upon precarious soil. A native of Italy, he spent a in the service of the unions. He held one of the top offices in the CIO in both Utah and Colorado prior to his retirement and he lived to see the day when his fellow citizens would elect him to represent them in the halls of the legislature. It was for his work in regards to the local college that he was recognized posthumously by CEU last week. His picture hangs in the college library as testimony to the faith he had in seeing that local students would have a college close at hand, something denied him as an immigrant coal miner. Frank Bonacci came up through the union ranks the hard way in a period of time when President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Wagner Act made It respectable to belong to a union and stand up to be heard. A staunch Democrat throughout all the years in his adopted country, the "Little Giant" never forgot the party that served him so well and his only advice to his countrymen in the new world was, what to him was some very sage "Fatta la Croce Sotto II political advice Gallo." jV Licensed Card of Thanks 1 by HUGH JARAMILLO Utah State Division of Wildlife Resources Conservation Officer honored by CEU V? opening weekend at Scofield Reservoir, The two (above) fasten another fish on H-- J Photo their string.
