Vernal Ave. 5 Jordanelle Dam consttiruc&ion dJivecis Provo Kiveo A milestone in construction of Jordanelle Dam near Heber City, Utah, was passed lasf week as workers work-ers diverted the Provo River through the dam's river outlet works. It is possible that there may be some sediment in the Provo River below the dam for several days as river flushes out any residue from construction of the tunnel. While such sediment may be normal, no significant amount is expected. The river bed has been moved three times in the past several years as construction workers prepared the dam's foundation and began to place the embankment materials. While that work has been ongoing, a tunnel was drilled through the left, or east, abutment to construct the river outlet for the dam. With completion com-pletion of the outlet, the notch in the dam where the river has been flowing flow-ing can be filled in and then the Safety council gives July holiday traffic warnings The Utah Safety Council estimates esti-mates that as many as five people may die in Utah traffic accidents during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend. So far 5 million cubic yards of materials out of an eventual 14.5 million have been placed in the dam. Jordanelle Reservoir will store 372,000 acre-feet of water with a surface area of 3,068 acres. By comparison, Deer Creek Reservoir south of Hcber City stores 152,000 acre feet of water, has a surface area of 2,683 acres and is 155 feet high. One acre-foot of water will sustain a family of four for one year. Granite Construction Company, the contractor for Stage II construction construc-tion of Jordanelle Dam, plans to complete the embankment work on the dam by December 1992. Soil moisture was 68 percent per-cent short, and 32 percent adequate. Winter wheat heading was virtually virtual-ly complete. Eighteen percent of the winter wheat crop had began turning turn-ing color, compared with 52 percent last year, and 69 percent average. Spring wheat had reached the heading head-ing stage in 66 percent of the crop, compared with 73 percent a year ago, and 78 percent average. Six percent of the spring wheat had begun be-gun turning color, 22 points below the 1990 level, and 26 points below average. Heading of barley was 73 percent complete, compared with 80 percent the previous year, and 84 percent average. Turning of barley had begun be-gun in 12 percent of the crop, 28 points below last year, and 32 points below average. Oats was 65 percent booted by week's end, 5 points below last year, and the average. Thirty-eight percent of the oats crop had reached the heading stage, compared with 62 percent a year ago, and 62 percent per-cent average. The average height of corn was 12.9 inches, 7.1 inches below the previous year, and 12.5 inches below be-low average. First cutting of alfalfa was 87 percent per-cent complete, 6 points below last year, and 7 points below average. Second cutting of alfalfa was getting get-ting under way in some areas of the State.
