J J j First Fast of all is the usual to teach fundamentals Others find more interesting subjects I Just as in any classroom some find plenty to keep busy BY A MOTHER I Statistics show that mentally mentally mentally men men- tally handicapped children are born each day in the United States Some three per cent of the population of each state is thus afflicted The condition b by r little percentage percentage per per- percentage cent age inherited and is no respecter of persons So what can and is being done Davis County is leading the state in attempting to help The work started in hi 1953 when Mrs l Alta AHa Stewart visited homes as a a home bound hound teacher teach teach- er for south Davis County After a few months though she had to stop because these children did not come under the program for which she was bei being paid But parents wanted something something some- some thing tiling done They started visiting visiting visit visit- ing gr groups in Salt Lake City set up to help these children After a meeting Armond Carr now secretary of the National Association for Retarded Children Children Children Chil Chil- dren then president of the Utah Association for Retarded Children asked E. E D D. D Dory about starting a special class for the cl children Mr l Rawlins was not e experienced experienced exper exper- per in this field he was him himself himself self just dust realizing his child had hada a problem The next day he hemet hemet hemet met Dr Perry then director of pupil personnel for Davis County Schools He too was interested in such a class and suggested Mr 1 Rawlins find a class room He looked for some time tune Finally the American American American Am Am- Legion hall was rented Dr Perry found a teacher Mrs Lor Loretta tta Sherwood And Andon Andon Andon on Monday 1 March 15 1954 at 9 am a.m. the school opened There was little equipment that day Only a small round table too many and too small chairs a juke box and a piano Everyone pitched in including including ing Mrs Sherwood's husband Cliff Clift who helped make equip equip- ment On March l 19 four days later the South Davis Exceptional Exceptional Child Group was organ organ- membership consisted of parents with children enrolled enrolled enrolled en en- rolled in the school Picked a as s officers Dory Rawlins president Harold L. L Pope vice president Mrs Florence Alder secretary and treasurer Keith Winegar Vinegar Mrs 1 Alta Stewart and mid George Christensen board of directors In September of that year the School Board oard leased the theAnn theAnn theAnn Ann Burningham home at South First East After cleaning cleaning cleaning clean clean- ing and some modifications the school had a home Parents Parents Parents Par Par- went to work to really make it so They were aided by others also The Bount Bountiful ul Junior Chamber of Commerce painted paint paint- ed the outside And the Jaycee Auxiliary has donated money fr m rn its annual fashion show to the school Enrollment jumped From the six it climbed to 16 For Forthe Forthe Forthe the 57 1956 school year E E. Lamar Parkin became director of f pupil personnel for the school district He was all acquainted acquainted acquainted ac ac- ac- ac with the school and its problems since he was principal of Stoker School and had been a member of the PTA for several years Under his direction another handicapped school was opened in Clearfield Mrs l Sherwood now had two groups She spent the mornings in in Bountiful ful fuI the afternoons in hi Clear- Clear field And the school program has continued to expand also Children have been swimming on Fridays for the past 10 months They are learning to swim too In fact some are now beginning to master diving Monday afternoon they put on rollar skates and circle the South Davis Youth Center floor Yes there is a fall now and then But other fall too Miss Darlene Freeman has been giving them instruction The most recent project is a work shop held each Wednesday Wednesday Wednesday Wednes Wednes- day afternoon at the school At this time mothers teach them basket weaving woodwork woodwork woodwork wood wood- work textile painting and other handicrafts Some of their work was shown at the open house last Sunday March I 17 Another project being tried is apprenticing for a few hours hourS' weekly those children the 14 f T T Lf Jr y p rJ a. a Jr f T y i. i U r. r ti i r d J r lt ll- ll V T f r- r i L. E Lamar Parkin and Dr Perry who have made the school bell ring for th the retarded Many difficulties have been removed Many others still re re- main One of the main problems problems lems is is space Space is limited A state law limits the number o of students to 12 for each teacher There are between 35 and 40 waiting to enter So as the school starts its fourth year the battle is not over Present officers R R.
