Walplace in the ly was not able to enter in the 1981 Olympics, held at Brigham Young University. The Senior Citizen Olympics is just like the real Olympics, they have every event possible, running, swimming, to horseshoes, Wally said. After each competition comes the exciting part. They place the red, white and blue ribbons around the winners neck. From the ribbon hangs their gold, silver or bronze medal. The medals are replicates of the real Olympic medal. After the Olympics are over, they attended a special council meeting where Governor Scott Matheson shook each of their hands. Wally has been very dedicated with his workouts in hopes to win the gold medal in 1982. He will d and enter the freestyle, and the Davis Highs girl volleyball team ended the season with a perfect region record and is ready to keep that record intact starting as they enter the State volleyball finals. We have a good chance at the final game and with our bracket in high school games that really means alot, says Avondet coach of the Darts volleyball team. Our girls have been playing just good enough to win and Lori (Parrish) and I told them in the game against Highland that they had to start playing like they wanted to win. And win they did. Highland is young and put up a good fight. This proved to the girls they could put a team away. When you get into a state tournament you need that kind of play from all your girls. It is open for all men and women over the age of 60 who are interested in competing in different sports and activities. Wally Baumann was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He was employed at the Hill Air Force Base for 16 years as a mechanic and five years as an RCC foreman. Wally was very proud of the fact that while employed he never lost a pilot or an aircraft. In 1975, Wally retired at the age of 59 because of health problems. He had to have a fused back and a hip replaced. For therapy the doctors recommended that he swim daily. Taking the physicians advice, Wally would go down to the Bountiful Recreation Center to swim daily, Monday through Friday for one hour. He didnt know how to swim at all, but through the help and encouragement of Mrs. Irmgaard Fisher, a swimming instructor employed there, he soon taught himself to swim. Now Wally can swim one half to of a mile daily. Wally says : Swimming is a hobby and it keeps me Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1981 Pd 0ndCmr Ma'r.
