Show 16 SAFETY March 22. 1991 HMop Times r safety's stake, f rales sioinipl Pedestrians; drivers must exercise caution Allow extra stopping time and distance for an approaching vehicle before stepping onto the crosswalk during snowy or icy weather con- ditions. by R.L. Robertson Ogden ALC Safety Office Pedestrians frequently disregard safety procedures while walking to and from work, particularly procedures for behavior in and around crosswalks. To avoid a tragic accident, read and follow these rules for both the pedestrian and the driver. Pedestrians A crosswalk does not automatically give you the right of way. It does not guarantee you safe crossing of a roadway. You must stop and look both ways before stepping off the curb. If it takes a few seconds for an oncoming vehicle to stop, or go through the crosswalk, wait that short time. A couple of seconds isn't worth your life. Don't insist on being in the right. If a vehicle is approaching, ensure they see you. The white lines won't vehicle if the driver stop a two-ton can't see you. d Wear reflective or clothing so you can be seen during times of reduced visibility. It would also be a good idea to put a strip of reflective tape on your outer clothing. light-colore- Use sidewalks instead of roadways whenever possible. Drivers Drive slower during darker hours in the morning, especially in major areas of congestion. Be alert to unexpected pedestrian entry into roadways in undesignated locations such as from behind parked cars, roadside trees and buildings. When driving in the inside lane, watch for sudden slowing or stopping of vehicles in the outside lane. There could be pedestrians crossing ahead of them. Drive slow in inclement weather. Sometimes pedestrians are not thinking about the extra stopping distance you need in such conditions. Watch for the pedestrian who steps out "knowing" you will stop. Always assume the pedestrian has not seen your vehicle. A pedestrian poised on the edge of the road probably would like to cross. Show courtesy and allow safe passage in front of you. Remember that as soon as you step out of your vehicle, you are a pedestrian. ATTENTION: fee!
