Show July 7, 1967 COLLEGIATE WEEKLY Page 3 The Looking Glass ( by Cheryl Lorenc "Psychedelic Generation" .Ml The maze of modern America full of trimly cut hedges may seem quite simpleton-capitalistic to World Liberationist Communists. Materialism or more correctly money is by a long shot the backbone and just-out-of-reach carrot for America. Poverty, Foreign Policy, Cultural Lag have a tendency to be reduced to their economic components so that they can be treated by the great American cure-all: MONEY. In the midst of middle class utilitarianism there is a quietl; frightening fast growing group of young Americans who are flowering Into the brightest, unshaven conglomeration to hit the scene since the boom days of immigration. Out of the swirl of flashing, blinking prisms of light has come the bouncing babies of the Black-bearded Beats, the pshychedelic Hippies. These Flower Children who prefer the vastness of the mind to the expanse of outer space push three major actions for those tired of the materialistic keep up-with-the-Hones - rat race. First do something, anything you feel you have to do. Second, Drop Out, go away from everything that is sticky with society, withdraw.. Third, Turn everybody on, to drugs, love, flowers, anything that will expand the mind. So somewhere between the Hell's Angels and Edward Al-bee is the be-spangled be-decked, Far Eastern-est, Rockiness, Free Love-inest group of apolitical missionaries to transform Faddism to Fact. A Fact that sickens parents, baffles police, finds silent commendation from ministers and has become a mind opener for advertising and modern art. The romantic rejection of civilization lends itself to historical comparisons: Could the hippies really be the "Christians" or "Puritans" of the Twentieth Century? Are the Beatles the god-head of an anti-culture destined to rule the world? There are many who have set up cheering stands on either side of the future's possibilities. In the adage of Henry David Thoreau to "live in each season as it passes; breathe the air; drink the drink, taste the fruit and resign yourself to the influence of each" lies the philosophy that has blown the mind of the late sixties for better or worse. Why drugs? To dress "funny", reject society, speak your own language, to make noise is somehow quite American. To retreat to your own personal Walden Pond (even if its in Golden Gate Park or the Lower East side of New York) may not be a middle class ethic but its still permissible. In the name of private peace and calm it would almost seem like the hippies have errected an intricate rationalization easily titled Love to cover a multltute of sins (which are not very original). Promiscuity's been around for quite a while. So has ' Peyote. They could be called sacraments of a sort and used as such. But in the Hippie's shouting reverence for free love and hallucinogenic drugs, they keep forgetting the real reason for their use. The natives used orgies whenever they couldn't stand the feeling of isolation. To put it another way, Drugs and sex were quick eases for tt.e ' pressure of tribal living. The search for self is a fairly modern phenomenon In many way.: made possible by higher standard of living brought on by Technology. . The material rewards are no longer enough. And maybe that's what the hippies are saying, almost. Retreating to a psychedelic insane asylum is not the answer no matter how nice the trip is getting there. Since Thoreau is one of the Hippie Philospher-Kings maybe he can answer them best, "What is the pill which will keep us well, serene, contended?" Not Peyote or LSD pills.
