Bethany Carson, 19:435 Last Thursday, Aug. 30, ihc Timpanogos girls' soccer team brought their high-powered offense to Spanish Fork to play the Lady Dons. It is obvious to see why the Timberwolves are rated as a top contender to take the Region IV title. They are one of the best girl soccer teams in the state, and they proved it here at Spanish Fork. The Lady Timberwolves took a total of 36 shots in the game to Spanish Fork's 13. The Timberwolves' offense dominated the field around Spanish Fork's goal throughout most of the game. That pretty much tells the story with Timpanogos winning 7-1. However, Spanish Fork played a valiant game to the end by only giving up seven of the 36 shots taken by Timpanogos. The defense worked hard all night keeping the ball from scoring more goals. The offense had a lot of shots that were close, but the ball just didn't go their way. Brooke Steinkopf scored Spanish Fork's only goal from her forward position in the first half with a solid kick into the back of the net. Despite the loss, the Dons are a vastly improved team over last year. They have developed more skills and are working belter as a team. They are getting better each game, and with some more hard work, discipline and time they may be able* to turn things around against Timpanogos for their next meeting. Hopefully they learned something by playing a good team in Timpanogos. and will be ready for their next away opponents. Lone Peak and American Fork. Cooperstown: From BASEBALL • B l the end of the week. At the parade, each team walks in an orderly fashion with their banner held high. During the introduction, everyone can look up and see skydivers making their way to the field. Following the ceremony, teams participate in competitions such as base running, around the horn (catch and release quickness), a homerun contest and a test for arm accuracy. Every player receives 96 pins with their team logo to trade and collect with other team members throughout their stay. This helps the young boys interact and get to know each other. It broadens their minds with a friendly cultural experience, and the pins are fun memorabilia. There are 24 baseball diamonds inside the complex, with a porch just like Boston's Fenway Park (minus The Green Monster in left field). Besides the green and red sands, which constitute each field's makeup, there are even Cooperstown Village, major league-style dugouts. SAM'S PREP OF T H E W E E K Breck lewis Quarterback Breck Lewis led a potent Spanish Fork offense against arch-rival Payson last Friday. Lewis threw for almost 300 yards and had two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in the 50-24 victory. After a slow start against Alta and Timpview, the junior quarterback is turning heads, leading the Don offense to 78 points in the last five quarters of play. Lewis is sitting at fourth on the 5A passing TD list, with eight. He's also currently tied for 6th for rushing TDs with three. "There's something in there to see and learn every time." Spanish Fork High School baseball coaches commented on their impression of the overall Cooperstown experience. "I've been around baseball for a long, long time," said Coach Shoe. "It is, bar none, the neatest baseball experience I've ever had. I wish ever}' kid in SF could go." Brian Argyle said he's never seen anything like it. "We came in on a Friday night and the lights were on the main (Coopcrstown) field," said Argyle. "When we came around a dark tum, and all of a sudden there's lights everywhere, I had a tear in my eye. It was like the movie "Field of Dreams.' For baseball lovers, that is it!" After the tournament ends, many families take in a MLB game at Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium or even Shea Stadium before returning home. If you enjoy the pure game of baseball, the way it's meant to be played, then this experience is a dream come true.
