Show PAGE 6 the mayor speaks an interview with tom stocks On June 16, Mayor Tom Stocks was Interviewed by Jim Stiles. The Interview has been edited for clarity and length. Zephyr: Mr. Mayor. I have a few questions here, asked bv residents about the condition of the roads around Moab. First of all, whats the status of construction on Williams Wav? It seems to have come to a halt. Mayor: The contractor Is to be notified as soon as we get the landfill work In place, which Tim Keogh advised me they have Just completed. The engineer will be contacting him so the contractor can re-sche- dule. Zephyr: The Cltv recently striped a lot of blcvcle lanes In Moab. but there Isnt even a center stripe on Mill Creek Drive. A would there have been an opportunity p Zephyr: in that case, couple of years ago to oet the present qreenskeeoer the training to move Into that lob? Mayor: I dont know his background or Interest He could better answer that question. Ken Laurlo and I had not communicated until recently and he hasnt talked to me directly about the turf manager position. Jerry Walker, who was former president of the Moab Golf Course Association, said that Ken wasnt particularly Interested In that portion of the work out there, tad that was a year or two ago. Do vou think theyll keep two people out there 19 Zephyr: maintain the oolf course? Mayor: We have five resumes In for turf manager, and most have supervised 5 to 10 people. So vou would doubt there would be a reduction in Zephyr: staff. Youre asking questions that Im not sure Im In a Whether Ken Laurlo has a position to address at this time. position out there or not Is dependent on the Individual himself. We havent decided If the City or the Golf Association Is going But I believe that to be responsible for the turf manager. ultimately the turf manager must be responsible to the City. Were concerned about the watershed. It Is a municipal golf course. Zephyr: In 1988 the Moab Film Commission, according to one of statistics, generated 61.3 million In revenues to Grand County In 1988. What specific functions has the Chamber of Commera performed that brought similar revenues to the Countv and City? And as a resuft whv did the Cltv Budget give twice as much to the Chamber as to the Moab Rim Commission: I Mayor: The budgets have not been approved. budgeted $3500.00 to the Moab Him Commission this year, the same as last I hadnt received any request for more. I budgeted exactly what they asked for. Whos complaining? If you want something, you should ask for It, I would presume. We should be working on positive notes. Does it help to degrade someone else? To get themselves farther In life? I dont know. If I w&s'the Moab Him Mayor: Mayor Tom Stocks resident out there commented to me that he had seen some near-ml-ss accidents when cars dont stay on their side of the road. Could the Cltv add center stripe? Mayor: I presume Its possible. The police department ought to look at that and give me the advice whether they should or shouldnt Sometimes you dont have enough space for It, and I dont have the answer without checking. Zephyr: There should be enough room for a center line. It Is a 2 lane road, and a malor thoroughfare. Mayor: Weve been trying to discourage that by developing other streets. With Holyoak Lane closed, wed hoped theyd come, around 4th East and not use that But If were having Id have no objection to a centerline. Zephyr: And there was a complaint about potholes on Kane Creek near-mlss- es, Blvd. Mayor: agree. I dont know what else to say. In this years budget, theres not enough money to make major repairs, but we can fix the potholes. Zephyr: On the footbridge that crosses Pack Creek near Kane Creek Blvd.. It appears that the Cltv has reduced the slope gradients on the approaches, possibly making It more whoalchalr accessible. But vou still have the bridge barricaded to prevent blcvcle use. Are there any plans to open that up for handicap Yes, I access? Tom: When we cut the grade, the nearby church became concerned that we do this In a manner that wouldnt create a liability on the part of the church. Merv Lawton was the contact person, and he asked that we hold up until they had a contract In place with the City to say they would not be responsible for anything done there. I believe that was mailed back to them yesterday (615). Zephyr: Will vou be able to upgrade the ramos anv more? Mayor: We dont have money In the budget for that Well do what we can, possibly even raising the bridge. Taking out those barricades, however, does not discourage bicycle and motorbike use. And that Isnt Its purpose. Its for elderly and maybe In the future handicap use. Zephyr: How long have plans been In the works to hire a turf ' manager for the golf course? t . y Mayor: ; Probably a couple of years, but actually getting 16' the' point where the Golf Association President Delbert Long came to the Council and said theyd be willing to fund the position, It was Just about three weeks ago. ,, . 1 : |
