A new radiation counter, designed to safe guard the health of uranium miners on the Colorado Plateau, has been developed here by the Atomic Engineering Corp., a subsidiary of Colonial Nuclear Industries Inc. The new counter is the first instrument designed specifically to measure radon gas concentrations in mine shafts, drifts and tunnels where thousands of. the nations miners are busy gouging out the riches of the Atomic Age. Robert Van Ilouten, president of Atomic Engineering, said the new device was designed to meet a general safety order issued by the Utah Industrial Commission. , That order, effective Jan. 1, 1956, requires all operators to ventilate their mines so that workmen will not be exposed to dangerous amounts of radiation. In order to assure such ventilation, an accurate instrument was needed for air sampling. Van Ilouten said Atomic Engineering spent two months perfecting the new counter known as the Utah Juno" Radon Gas Survey Unit. It is the answer to concern in medical circles that the nations uranium miners may be exposing themselves to radiation that will cause progressive tissue damage, illness and deaths. We have taken laboratory equipment and made an easily-handle- d field unit to assist the mine operators in complying with the new Utah order", Van Houten said. This safety order certainly will be the basis of similar regex-press- ly . ulations throughout the mining industry." With the present operation, Russell said, the company is assured a $4,000 monthly profit, plus AEC bonus payments. The company has retained a mining engineer on a part-tim- e basis to control tonnage and grade, Russell added. The Five States mine is on one of 15 claims owned by the company on Tomsich Mountain, with ore coming from a Shlnarump formation channel. Partial drilling has shown the channel is at least 27 feet wide, but its length has not been determined. Because of the difficult terrain and because there is ample ore at hand, no further drilling is contemplated at present. The Five States headquarters office is in Albuquerque, N. His election took place at the annual meeting of Great Northern held recently in Vancouver, B.C. The move is a forerunner of Federals future plans to exploit the companys uranium properties in Canada through Great Northern acting as the Canadian spearhead. The program is reported to be guided by Floyd B. Odium, owner of Atlas Corp., and majority stockholder of Federal. Great Northern, according to the Odium program is to begin uranium ore production at once. The program is to be financed through sale of Great Northern securities in Canada. Great Northern is an affiliate of Federal Uranium, a Nevada corporation. Nebeker is quoted as saying Federal shares will be listed on the American Stock Exchange anc that it is contemplated a substantial' block o Great Northern shares will be made available for trading in Canada. Federal, with the mining knowhow of Hecla Mining Co. as operator, is reported to be producing 250 tons of uranium ore a day from the Radon mine at the north end of the Big Indian district of Utah. It is understood Great Northern may also enter phases of the mining industry other than t uranium. Model 101 0149.50 (Dimenuoni 5s5x7tt In.)
