Take Care This Halloween With the recent Tylenol, Visine and scares, many persons are understandably worried about what sort of bizarre Halloween tricks may be played on their youngsters this year. In years past some unfortunate and tragic tricks have been :f played orf unsuspecting youngsters. We believe too much caution can ruin the fun of Halloween, but jsome precautions including safety tips, are in order. We suggest that North Sevier parents accompany their children when they go trick or treating, or have older brothers or sisters :$or other reliable adults eo with them. H Halloween visits for very small children should be confined to the neighborhood and should be made during afternoon and early evening hours. d ;3 or reflectorized, Costumes should be made of fflame retardant material that is short enough to avoid tripping the &child wearine it. It might be wise to consider makeup rather than commercial fmasks, according to the Utah Safety Council. The council says Jmasks often have eyeholes that obstruct the vision of a youngster. painted face and a decorative hat are the best safety measures for a childs clear vision, the council savs. 3f Parents should warn children to cross the street only at crosswalks never between parked cars and to pause and carefully Cjlook both ways before crossing. In addition to these precautions, we suggest that if any North &Sevier families are heading to Halloween parties in their automobiles or trucks that they drive slowly and with extreme icaution through neighborhood streets. Children have been known 3to dart out unexpectedly into the street, particularly at Halloween rl Republican. For you Martians, a Yellow Dog Republican is an elephant lover who would vote the GOP ticket if every candidate were a Yellow Dog. 7-- $ light-colore- ;Aime. & it should This past week, I received a letter from a supporter of a congressional .andidate telling me that it is more important to vote for the man. I agree. I would much rather vote for a man or woman than cast my ballot for a pig or a duck. Of course, as I said above, if they were yellow dogs, they would still get my vote. Oh, you say, he doesnt mean that. He means I should not wony about which partly he belongs to, but whether he is a good, honest man. Well, lets take a look at the Vote for the Man argument. I used to believe that the phrase I vote the man not the party had some credibility. The phrase frequently is used by members of the minority party in every state to help keep them from despair. I mean, after all, it is terribly frustrating to vote for losers The minority party continually. members will, therefore, choose the best man from the opposition party and vote for him so that they can once in a while smile and say, I voted for a winner this time. Of course, it doesnt come out of their mouths that way. What comes out is: I don't vote a straight party go without saying that when the children get home with 5jtheir goodies that an inspection be made of the contents just in i&ase. It only takes one psychotic trickster to turn a fun Halloween Some North Sevier families have opted to forego the trick or treating, because of the recent scares, by having small parties. Others have said they will only go to friends houses. We suggest jalso that trips be made to the homes of older couples or widows Sjwho look forward to giving candy to children at Halloween. These kind people who love to share the joy of small children happily gathering Halloween treats should not be forced to suffer because the crueltv of a few. We sincerely doubt that North Sevier people would be so careless or cruel as to cause intentional or untintentional harm to youngsters. Taking these simple precautions, however, will j;ur ensure against those one or two exceptions to the rule. -- Editor: ',1 1 a previous editorial, indicated that your-tsel- f and someone' else v- - felt that it was more responsible to continue to praise the charges for i services in this com- munity rather than finding alternative ways to meet the city's financial 5 obligations. I do not doubt that the city fathers are trying to do their best. But I think that they forget they are suppose to represent all classes of people in Salina, not just Some of you might think I am making fun of Democrats in Utah who obviously are in the minority party. Not so. I am making fun of either partys members when they vote for people whose personal and political philosophy have nothing tq do with what these party members profess to believe. Republicans have been guilty in the past. Remember how wishy-wash- y GOP leaders hesitantly hopped on the welfare wagon 20 years ago so as not to lose the liberal vote, particularly in the east? Now just look at the Democrats who nave spent us nearly into bankruptcy, boldly declaring their belief in a balanced budget and fiscal conservation. Lets put it this ay: It is great to vote for good, honest men. But why not vote for good, honest men who also embrace your personal philosophy? Republicans, for the most part, hold to more conservative principles of government. Democrats, for the most part, hold to more liberal principles. If I were a Republican who found myself believing in liberal amounts of welfare, abortion on demand, the Equal Rights Amendment to the federal constitution, government intervention in private enterprise, and activism in our environmental affairs, I would immediately switch a Democrat who believed that abortion was an acceptable alternative only in extreme circumstances, that the ERA was a boondoggle, that government was no less corrupt than private enterprise, and that welfare, as it is now dished out, is going to bankrupt the country, then I would become a Republican. If I were our com-y- :, It is our responsibility, a as American citizens, to : become familiar with the I , and acquaint ourselves with the candidates on the ballot. It doesnt take much to become aware of whats if I believed that should stay out of both government our private, moral, and business lives, I would switch to the Libertarian Party, if that party were a viable, electable alternative, which it is not. Isay. Stick with the party that embraces your own philosophy. Woii with them when theyre down. Vote for their good men and help their cause, no matter how good a chance they have of winning. If you find your philosophy at odds, switch parties. It is no shame to be a member of the minority party. Nationally speaking, I belong to the minority party. In Utah, I belong to the majority party. I voted a straight party ticket last time, and I will this time. The only time I have not and will not is when it is clear to me that my partys candidate has a serious character flaw. When I was a senior in high school, my civics teacher told us the only reason he was a Republican in our Ohio county was because 90 percent of the populace were also. He said if he were a registered Democrat, he could not vote in the Republican primaiy. what(You must be a registered to vote in your partys ever primary election in Ohio). If he could not vote in the primary, he said, he could not make sure the Republicans gave us an honest Six If it comes down to electing a good, honest man whose philosophy is opposite yours, or electing a dishonest man who will vote your principles when in office, go with the honest man and then make sure he knows how you expect him to vote. But I honestly do not believe that this will happen too often in any of our experiences. Voting for the man instead of the party seems to be a way of soothing the hurt and frustration of belonging to a minority party. It is that, or it is simply evidence that the voter has no inkling of the difference between the two major political parties.
