meeting last evening was the sall salt lake city and jordan canal now in course of construction its consideration by the various speakers occupying in nearly all of the hour houn and a half ti the meeting was in session the tile first speaker was mayor little who reminded those present and desired them to remind other others of the special election to be held on monday the ath of april when it would be decided by tho the people whether or not salt lake nake city should assume an indebtedness of or as much thereof as the city council might deem sufficient lelent for tie the work of finishing the canal at the tile election the vote would be sos roe yee yos or no on the question shall ashall the city 11 and all should know kaow before going to the polls what they were going there for it was therefore needful that the bishops instruct their people and make the matter perfectly clear to their minds Ep that when they went up to vote tote they would know just what wliam they were doing there might he be many who did not see the necessity of the cites going into debt for water these were for most part persons who possessed water claims already and did not wish to be taxed for the purpose of furnishing water to their less fortunate neighbors sectional feelings 1 should be smothered and the whole people unite in voice and action for the common good the growth of the entire city depended on water and water it must have though getting it should increase taxation the speaker for one fi felt felb W willing lii lil to dohis dahis do his part art toward paying g for th the building 0 of the canal A question was here asked as to whether the people in voting were compelled to vote for the borrowing rowing of or whether they could voto voia for a portion of that amount as they desired mayor lattie answered that the vote was i to ein bin empower power powen the city to gorrow sorrow as much of 25 50 00 as was needed either the whole or only a palt part pait and that the city council whom the people had elected ediab represent them were to have the control of the matter and it would rest with their judgment if the people did not have hae confidence in th the e j judgment of their re representatives presen ta they should not have elected them to office bishop t followed in an expression of his views it did not follow low that because was wa f voted for ahat that that much would be required but if it were required it would of course be used the expense of holding elections made it advisable to hold as few as possible and the amount had been detata set at a maximum to obviate the n necessity ecea sity of frequent elections elect eject ions lons he also advocated perfect freedom among the people to vote as they pleased as fis it was a matter which concerned them personally they should be told beforehand what they thy were going 0 to vote for so that each might vote according to intention and then allowed to go uninfluenced fluen ced and cast their ballots as they thought best counselor jos joa E taylar suggested I 1 that to avoid anold confusion contusion at the ballot box there thero should joe be but one ticket that each ticket should be an affirmative one and that the voter who desired to vote no should nea negative 0 tive the ticket himself bishop fi D U wooley ooley thought the dimensions of the canal were beyond alln alin necessity that half the proposed de depth th would be amply sufficient to hol hoa hold hoid all the water to be obtained he was in favor of brinin bringing wamer water to the city but not in in expending twice as much as was necess necessary sary to dig the canal bishop john H smith did not think the canal an inch too deep the proposed size was necessary to give the stream requisite force the ditch proposed by Bishop Wooley would take the water about 27 miles on the way vay and that was all while the iho canal decided upon would send tend it along niong all the way the plan and dimensions had llad been thoroughly bly discussed by bv men of study ani ant and experience an and considered conall on all ali sides before they were adopted tho city needed water no citizen had too much many not enough and many none at all the canal was an absolute necessity if the jordan was waa inadequate a t e to supply the water utah M lake 0 n lust must be ta tapped aped it was the natural reservoir i of salt lake valley lefand and ana its waters cane tare carefully fully husband ed would supply an abundance anandan ce might be that hundreds of acres land would bo be laid wd waste along its shores and that to erect dykes and locks jocks at fit the tho head of the jordan would entail considerable expense but when the benefit to be realized was considered the expense was not a dro drop p in the bucket the query was suggested supposing the people peoples should hoiM vote no what would become of the canal and whether it would not be better to place the sum to bo be borrowed at a inore mere modest figure than 2 to induce the people 4 to vote affirmatively bishop hardy irardy replied that lie he understood that was the amount to be voted gor for and that if it tool took but to complete this cam canni the rest of the money coult could be bo used elsewhere for aon for similar purposes ho re W was as willing to leave it ato to the city council who were personally interested as much as thorest bf going goin g to was waste ta moi mol ies ley on the matter purposely brides he ho had llad voted v ltv for those men who composed the Counell and would trust them accordingly other remarks were made to the same effect as us those given after which apostle brigham Young who was present was invited to speak he me responded in in a abrien brief but spirited address on the same subject he was in favor of the canal but was wa not certain thau that justice was being done in its construction to the builders of other canals who for 15 years had been striving to complete theirs but could not do so for lack of means while we bigger stronger and having more money were about to send our canal right through and take the water they had been trying to get possession of for years he also referred to the remarks of bishop smith concerning the tho land that would be laid waste on the shore utah lake and thought thousands and thousands of acres would better express it than hundreds of acres it was not our policy to desolate land but to reclaim it T the he dykes of holland were mentioned as being in g twenty enty feet t a above ve the level levei of the co country and the speaker suggested gest tho the e erection of similar bul war barks on the shores of utah lake to not only save but reclaim thousands of acres of land which would I 1 otherwise be desolate or unredeemed from the waters of the lake As As to the remark made by a brevious previous previous speaker of freedom to vote 9 he be understood der stood our freedom to consist of liberty to do right to unite as solidly so d y on this as on any other question and after first assuring ourselves thab that we were right go to the polls like a band of brethren and vote the right way if we did this god would approve our course if not lie he would certainly disapprove meeting adjourned for two weeks FROM SATURDAYS damet DAILY nally march A r A R cli SO i silk worm eggs etc we are repeatedly asked the question where can silkworm silk klik
