Records clerk Melody Ackerman said some of the diplomas were unclaimed because students have owned fees or fines or other moneys to the school. However, if these former students or a family member can provide sufficient identification, the diplomas can be claimed now. An original birth certificate also was found in the records. Ackerman is responsible for maintaining the student permanent record file. When they say permanent, they really meant it," she said. Surprisingly, however, only four candidates filed for the two seats on the Davis County Commission. Among other surprises were the rumored candidates who did not file. Those reportedly expressing an interest who did not file include auto dealer and Davis School Board member Dan Eastman (Utah House of Representatives), book publisher Gibbs Smith (Utah House), conservative attorney Don Redd (Davis County Commission), former Davis ic y. According to principal Bob Vincent, one of the three students took the unloaded gun to school to intimidate another student. Before that could occur, however, another of the three acquired the gun and put it to the boys head as a joke. The third student hid the gun on his person. The incident occurred in one of the school gyms before school began. Vincent said the area is crowded at that time of day, and though adults were supervising, none of them saw it.. A student witness eventually reported the presence of the gun and law officers were called to the school to deal with the situation. All three students were arrested and taken to juvenile detention. When we talked to them about it, all of the kids said the incident in the gym was a joke, said Vincent. It isnt a joke to us. The victims mother couldnt agree more. She appeared before the School Board to question district policy on weapons offenses. She said her son, who had previously been a friend of the student who put the gun to his head, is living in fear. He has also become the victim of other students who come up behind him and put their fingers to the back of his head, simulating the incident. He could have been killed, she said. Theres no feeling of safety for him any more. Of course, we want safe schools, for our students and teachers," said District Superintendent Grant Dollinger. But we cant guarantee that nothing further will happen. No matter what we do, if students want to get a gun in, they could do it.
