Show RATES OH ON DRY GOODS SOUTHERN ROADS ADVANCE FREIGHT ON COTTON FABRICS new york june IS 18 the journal ot of commerce says after july lat shippers ot of dry goods or more strictly speaking cotton fabrics will have to pay higher freight rates to and from all points reached by the southern railroads this news will be received with much sur surprise Tilse in view of the fact that only a few days ago the southern classification committee promulgated a new schedule containing many changes from the former classification which took effect monday the most important change so tar as dry goods interests are concerned was the new provision Tela relative tive to shipments of cotton fabrics under this provision all such goods were to be shipped at fifth class rates without any warning however the southern roads through their classification flea fi tion committee have issued a ruling to the effect that on and after the first of next month all such goods must be rated at fourth class or in other words one whole class higher than at present the freight rate on the basis of a haul from new york to atlanta ga Is 73 cents per pounds for fourth class and sixty cents on fifth class the difference between fourth claas class and fifth class tales tate to other southern points Is to about the same dry goods interests have feared that the southern railroads it if the latter granted their requests to make a change in the classification of cotton fabrics would advance the rate by placing these goods in a higher class when the new classification was issued recently bo however wever leaving the goods in fifth class as desired by shippers it was thought the matter was settled the tact fact that the southern railroads have made this change has been an by commissioner McCa mccarthy rily of the new now york freight and transport bureau |
