clearness of thought chastity of purpose are measured largely by the cleanliness of environments of all places then outside the home the schoolhouse should be the most cleanly the best ventilated warmed and lighted building in the community are our schoolhouses clean ask any ordinary housekeeper if she W would consider her uncarpeted floors clean if they were scrubbed but once or twice a year if the kitchen or dining room in in which from two to ten children live needs scrubbing every week what of the schoolroom where from thirty to ninety children are kept during the day I 1 have laughtin es that have been scrubbed but once a year the floors are full of cracks in which the dust oi of aes lodge impregnated with germs of disease when the janitor sweeps he does not remove the dirt from the school room but stirs it up so as to thoroughly b mix the germs of throat dis boses and consumption which many are given 0 off in eions from diseased throats and lungs r diphtheria and tuberculosis and allows it to settle upon wall casings and desks to be distributed by the duster or an occasional gust of wind which may perchance find its way along the dusty walls experiments have proven that my many a dreaded disease is transmitted by these particles of dust inhaled into the lun luns lungs s this condition can be eliminated in the school as easily as in the homo home by the use of a good quality of linoleum on the floors thus enabling ZD the janitor to wipe up the dirt and dust with a wet cloth the first expense would be considerable but when length ion t th of time it will last the saving 0 of walls pictures books floor etc are considered to say nothing of the health of the pupils which is above price the cost per pupil would be but a few cents per Y year ear
