Dawn Carder Only a short while ago Erwin and Petra Schuhbauer visited in Utah and Nevada while researching minerals in the two states When they returned to Germany Herr Schuhbauer prepared an extensive article on the minerals for the Mineralieo Magazio Lapis The Schuhbauers fortunately made another trip to Delta their third just to collect rocks for fun and for adding to Erwin’s collection The two people first visited the area in 1980 after having met Ted Harris Later they became acquainted with Rex Harris and his daughter Tina Nielson and they learned about red beryl and other Utah gems and minerals Petra Schuhbauer is a delightful person who reaches out to everyone she meets As we talked she told me how friendly the people here are but much of the credit goes to her warmth and After introducing herself enthusiasm to a group she and Erwin encountered out on the desert the family invited the German couple to a get together in Spanish Fork It was according to Petra a delightful experience Erwin now retired served for many years as sales manager for a large German company Petra related that only a few years ago a friend of her husband ignited an interest in rocks The friend is exclusively interested in emeralds but Erwin enjoys hunting for and collecting all kinds of gems and minerals Actually it was after developing his hobby that Erwin was introduced to Ted Harris He (Erwin) met the man in charge of the large Munich mineral show which Ted attends annually Ted’s name was given to Erwin the two met and Erwin began to learn of GUESTS enjoyed a farewell dinner with Delta friends Front row left to right Erwin Schuhbauer Lois Harris Rex Harris back Tina Nielson Petra Schuhbauer Ted Harris GERMAN 7:00 PM t in county $1800 out of USPS County goes Yes Petra likes America Most of her trips have been to the western United States but she and Erwin did on one occasion visit friends in upstate New York where they saw Niagra Falls The only thing that bothers her about Americans is their waste of food “You can tell that Americans have never been hungry” she said The Schuhbauers left Delta last Friday They were on their way to Moab for more exploration before lug back to California From California they will fly home to Germans Hopefully they will return to Delia where their presence was enjoyed and appreciated Vol 0 78 No 52 June 30 1988 Siting criteria for hazardous waste facilities discussed by Sarah Inez Moody A series of meetings around the State brought members of the Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Committee to Delta Tuesday evening June 21 1988 with Brent Bradford Executive Secretary chairing the meeting Held at the Delta City Council chambers the meeting attracted many area residents Mr Bradford explained that the and the committee has authority responsibility to protect public health This authority and the environment stems from the Solid and Hazardous Waste Act enacted in 1979 by the Utah State Legislature and amended in 1988 to grant authority to the committee to establish criteria for siting commercial hazardous waste facilities and cinerators At present there is no such siting criteria He further explained that waste is hazardous if it has certain characteristics which make it potentialThese include ignitable ly harmful reactive wastes corrosive wastes wastes and toxic wastes that leach cerof heavy metals tain concentrations (cadmium mercury lead) or those that into the leach specific pesticides environment Regulations have been developed he said to manage hazardous waste from us point of generation to its final place Known as of disposal these waste management regulations are designed to protect the public and environment from exposure to hazardous wastes 1989 all states are reBy November quired to assure 20 years of capacity for treating and disposing of hazardous wastes generated within the state This may be accomplished through either state facilities or agreements with other states Recognizing that many present were there in protest of the proposed Rollins Company constructing a hazardous waste incinerator at Lynndyl Bradford requested that questions and comments on same be limited in the essence of time The audience complied quite well with that request Clyde Bunker urged more stringent regulations on the trucking industries to lessen the possibilities of highway spills Clark Nielsen and Dr Rodger Scoville asked that public health and clean environment (air water land) main of primary importance in drafting the siting criteria A formal statement by APTUS a company with an application on file to construct such a facility in Tooele County was read into the record by Margaret (Maggie) Wilde APTUS she said is concerned that the state’s new initiative to set siting criteria is duplicative and unnecessary APTUS believes that the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) should be the deciding factor in making siting decisions Ms Wilde said “APTUS believes the state should resist the temptation to intrude into land use decisions” Gordon Nielson observed that companies specializing in the construction of hazardous waste facilities look for three things: railroad major highway and an adequate water supply “These also auract a growing population” he said “and maybe the state should give consideration to subsidizing those comthese panies who would construct facilities further afield than near a population center” Reading a formal statement into the record was Mrs Gordon (Barbara) Nielson who expressed many concerns about the proposed facility at Lynndyl Topping these were polluting the environment and transportation spills As an elementary school principal Mrs about the Nielson was concerned students if such a highway spill should occur within ten miles of the school According to her statement Rollins is notorious for accidents at its other sites and polluting the environment “Job will not be as great as opportunities Rollins and its proponents would have us believe” she continued “About 150 jobs would be available through conBut once completed the struction to about numbers drop drastically “Supposing we now have the facility” began Susan Dutson “and we have a transportation spill Who is “Supposing we now have a facility and testing of emmisions ground water or other indicates there is a violation of allowable standards what would be the procedure and w ould the company be allowed to continue to operate during the interim of the matter being corrected?” asked Susan Dutson Mr Bradford answered that the procedure is to fine a company and order compliance to whatever the degree of the violation However the company would continue to operate subject to dailv fines if the non compliance continues beyond a specified time As far as transportation spills the company who generates the waste is responsible for the waste until it is disposed of The Utah Solid and Hazardous Waste Committee was meeting the next day in Tooele A similar type meeting was scheduled for Tremonton on June 23 and the series close Monday June 27 with a meeting at Salt Lake City Law enforcement officers complete course by Dawn Carder Utah Highway Patrolman Kirk Harding of Fillmore and Millard County Forrest Sheriffs Deputy Roper of Delta have just completed a difficult two week course “Chemistry of Hazardous Materials” at the Hazardous Materials Institute in Salt Lake City The course was sponsored by the Department of Public Safety and Utah Emergency Comprehensive Management The intense schooling three hours of college credit earned in two weeks consisted of ten hours a day of chemistry instruction with four to five hours of homework Thirty people attended and the class average was 904 percent Kirk Harding ranked 6th in the class and Forrest Roper ranked 7th! Harding and Roper explained that the class dealt with the chemistry in chemicals to be found in transportation related incidents such as truck accidents train derailments and fires With the chemical industry grow ing by 2000 new chemicals per year noted Harding “there is a need for education” the many places where minerals can be found Petra who appears interested in just has degrees in about everything English French and Spanish She has been a secretary and now runs a party service in Munich preparing and cateroccasions ing food for different Acknowledging that rock hounding is Erwin’s “thing” she commented that she just accompanies him wherever he Hinckley Lions July 4th ‘f I? is the Hazardous Kirk Harding Materials Coordinator for the highway patrol and Forrest Roper is the Civil Defense Director for Millard County The two will work together as both training and response teams and their response area includes Juab Beaver Millard and Iron Washington counties "Our prime function” the two men explained “is to function as resources to the people to help mitigate hazards” The week of June 27 has been designated “State of Utah Hazardous Materials Awareness Week” Douglas Bodero Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Pubbc Safety told the Kirk students the Chemistry of Hazardous Materials class “Hazardous waste materials may be the main problem of the 1990s Therefore we in Utah want to be able to take care of the situation” The continuing education is to get trained people designed throughout the entire state Kirk Harding and Forrest Roper received the following letter of commendation from John T Nielsen Commissioner of the State of Utah Department of Public Safety: “1 wish to express my personal conand those of the Departgratulations ment of Public Safety for your successful completion of the first field offering of the National Fire Academy Materials' ‘Chemistry of Hazardous m Harding delivered by the Hazardous Ma'e'iai' Institute “The State of Utah is pleased to hast been involved in providing the opportunity for you to become better prepared to carry out your roles in providing for the safety of the public lour dedication to and involvemen' u 'he hazardous materials field is app'e u'ed by all “Once again cong’atulanons or completion of this course" Both Harding and Roper are going back to Salt Lake City for a:io'heT course Hazardous Material Tastnai Consideration This Jass will be conducted during the first two weeks of August Deseret Fairgrounds Concessions t |
