Show 2 by Zimowsky How was your Thanksgiving dinner? Im usually stuffed for a couple of days after the holiday. After a big dinner and a couple of turkey sandwiches for desert, this writers had it for another year. One thing about Thanksgiving, ya can can always look forward to turkey sandwiches for lunch, for the next couple of days. Who ever invented turkey for thanksgiving had a sharp idea. I couldnt hack a steak, chicken chow mein, pork chops, bacon and eggs or chop suey for Thanksgiving dinner - it just wouldnt feel right. one I remember spending Thanksgiving day, camping on a beach in southern California. My dinner and all the trimmings consisted of a can of spaghetti and a quart of beer. For some reason this didnt seem like Thanksgiving dinner. This writer had one thing to be thankful for this holiday. The TV was busted. Now theres a story in itself. Last weekend, this television repairman tried to get the tube ready for the Thanksgiving day football schedule. But all attempts failed. After pulling on a couple of wires and testing the tubes, old Z accepted defeat and took it to die repair shop. But ya know, all that silence is great. After not having the tube for a couple of days, ya wonder why ya have it at all. He mentioned also that efforts are continuing to have Paramount pictures donate replica engines of the Jupiter and No. 119 to the Park service for use at Golden Spike site. In addition to Mayor Zundel, others attending from Box Elder county included Willis L. State Representatives-Elec- t Hansen and W. Edward Kerr, County Commissioner-Elec- t William L. Sheep operators should make plans now to vaccinate to help prevent abortions caused by this disease, Dr. Don W. Thomas, Utah State university Raps Preparation Plan Editor: Today we received a printed form from your Principal advising us that our children would be dismissed from school for teacher ce training. I think it is considerate of these teachers to send up parents excuses for their excessive school absence, just as they have demanded them of our children these many years. Do you suppose the teachers will also accept the same penalities of 0 percent or more, which they have imposed on our children, for excessive absence from their classes? 'This latest classroom lockout, when coupled with the other excuses for closing the schools, such as three months summer vacation, Christmas vacation, spring vaction, teachers strikes, U.E.A. conventions, deer season, census, holidays, football games, assembly programs, field trips and six-hodays with free school makes periods; teaching the most under-worke- d profession in America today: hours per year versus 2,080 1,080 approximately hours in other vocations. But the real harm, yes even the tragedy, of this exodus from the classroom lies in its effect on our children. More and more as the classrooms close, they find it necessary to obtain an education in spite of our expensive educational system, not because of it. I resent, very strongly this further curtailment of my childrens educational opportunity. I agree that teachers should improve their teaching capability with training; but when everyone else finds it possible to improve themselves on their own time and at their own expense, why should this privileged group be permitted to further limit the precious few hours our children have left in school? Forty-fiv- e hours of child education are forever lost by each teacher who deserts the classroom for one and one-hahours every other week. (In Logan and Ogden this farce has reached a full half day every Wednesday). I believe you school administrators are betraying the public trust by conceding to this teacher gimmick for fewer working hours. Let the teachers be trained; but put our children back in the classrooms. 10-2- .. Respectfully, David J. Lets be fair and look at the good and not only the bad. Great things are being accomplished by the agricultural chemical firms in the United States. They are more than doing their share to keep America... The Beautiful. They are keeping farmers in business and food on our tables while at the same time furnishing us with a more environment than healthy, bug and weed-fre- e has ever existed. To ban such an effort would be very unjust to the industry and ourselves. To make a long article short, I would just like to say, at least to my friends and neighbors of this fine community, agricultural chemicals are good. I have made them my business because through them I may in some small way help to make things better for us all. Early one morning while making my usual milk deliveries, I was backed up against a garage door by what appeared to me to be a mad and dangerous beast. I could have counted every tooth in his mouth and it appeared too, every hair on his back was standing straight up. I was sure my day had come and I always wanted to go at least in one piece, but I was sure then that this beast was about to scatter me far and wide. While standing there, arms and back to the door, eyes bulging from my head, knees knocking, on the verge of a heart attack, a sweet little lady opened her door and said, dont worry, hes a nice puppy, he wouldnt bite a flea. I quit the milk delivery business that day! Since, I have learned all dogs arent bad, there Im getting are a lot of good ones. Matter-of-fac-t, real fond of them, and slowly loosing my fear. In teaching, as in many other efforts, performance depends upon preparation. Those of us wno watch television know that our favorite half-hoprogram resulted from hours of work by all those persons listed in the credits. Those of us who attend sports events know hours of practice produce the skills that make for exciting games. Those of us who cook meals for our families know that many times the 20 to 30 minutes it takes to consume a delightful dinner is spent in the kitchen preparing it. Those of us who make speeches at our clubs, present plays, decorate for special events, etc., know preparation time far outweighs the time of enjoying the event. By analogy, our personal experiences should help us realize that teaching is a kind of enterprise that requires much day by day immediate preparation. We should support our teachers in their efforts to obtain adequate preparation time and perhaps even provide better means for it than the one being tried now.
