Show Roosevelt Greets Who's Who of Hollywood At Luncheon Celebrating His 59th Birthday WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UP) President Roosevelt celebrated his fifty-ninth birthday Thursday Thurs-day like. most any other day-working day-working at his desk on official business, receiving callers and dictating mail. He permitted one major interruption, inter-ruption, however. He joined with Mrs. Roosevelt in giving a luncheon for a group of Hollywood Holly-wood and stage celebrities here to attend the scries of birthday balls Thursday night. Mr. Roosevelt went to his offices of-fices as usual and handled sev eral appointments. At 1 p. m. he returned to the White House to greet the stars who contributed their services to the campaign to raise funds to fight infantile paralysis. The luncheon guest list read like a Hollywood "Who's Who," and included Wallace Beery, Deanna Durbin, Preston Foster, Benny Goodman, Charlotte Creenwood, Constance Moore, Wayne Morris, Maureen O'Hara, George Raft, Al Ritz vand Lana Turner. Also present were Kay Al- dridfle, the magazine rover girl; Cliftcn Fadiman, radio fame; Marj Hardwick and Alice Marble, Mar-ble, lennis stars; Tom Harmon, All-America football player, and La u ritz Melchior, opera star. After luncheon, the president retired to his study. Mrs. Roosevelt Roose-velt escorted the guests on a sightseeing tour of the White Housr. The president will deliver a five-minute "thank you" speech to the nation Thusday night for the rmntrihutlons to the infantile paralysis compaign. r4 |
