included action at the state convention contention through which the women vice rice chairmen ot of county committees will bie reatter sit in the state committee As practically every county in utah has a vice chairman and as tho the committee before fridays action had 46 members the new arrangement will make the membership lof ic the state committee about seventy five democratic PLATFORM sixteen declarations of principle were made in the platform adopted by the democratic state convention the platform follows avoe wie the representatives ot of the democrate Domo crate party af utah in convention assembled this day c cf f september Sep temper A D 1926 make this declaration ot of clas and principles 1 we re attire OUT our belief in the time honored principles ot of equal rights to all and special privileges to none in a just and equitable distribution trib ution of the results ot of toll in local self government as against centralized bureaucracy in public office as a public trust in government by the people administered without favor as apposed opposed to government bought controlled and used by selfish interests opposed to the interests of our state and its people 2 we are opposed posed to toabe the ever increasing tax burden imposed upon taxpayers of this state by the republican office holders and resent the actions of the last republican state legislature and state officers in balking by political chicanery the right of governor george if dern to function a as executive of the state after an overwhelming majority ot of the people of the state had voted their confidence in himi hami and in denying to him the right to control or restrict state expenditures or administer his office tor for the benefit ot of the state we invite the election ot of a democratic legislature that will unite with and support the governor so that the state may have the benefit of his bis recognized financial and ex ability and ot of his intimate knowledge of 0 every part ot of the state 3 we deplore the political trickery of the last legislature in passing a bill which provided that no candidate for office boffice whether a school superintendent a judicial officer united states senator or other candidate could be placed upon more than ong one ticket this bill was aai avowedly ow passed to restrict and obstruct the freedom lof lo f the ballot in the interest ot of the senior senator As tree free men favoring the utmost freedom of action by the people in casting their ballots balloM we condemn this or any effort to disfranchise in any degree the voters of this state we further deplore the tact fact that after the governer govera gov erncr cr had called to the attention of the legislature the tact fact thattie that the supreme court ot california had held that such an effort to disfranchise the voters was wag unconstitutional tut ional and contrary to the amer american tradition of fair play and freedain of political expression the said republican legislators in violation of their oaths ot of office and ot of their duty to promote the interest and general Bj elfare ot of the people of this state and not deprive them ot of t their heir rights and liberties by political cal chicanery in the interest of any candidate passed this infamous bill over the governors veto we believe that legislators should be interested in righting ting wron wrongs and preventing oppression 0 of the people and not in creating such that legislators isla tors should legislate la in the interest terest t of all the people and not use their position to seek to promote the interest 0 of any political candidate 4 we believe that the senator to be elected from this state should be prina primarily I 1 rily interested in his own state and the interests ol of his own people we are opposed to the senior senator from this state invariably favoring the manufacturing interests of the east as opposed to the agricultural and aid producing interests of this state and its people as he has done la in favoring the meat packers ackers D as against the livestock producers the he textile manufacturers as against the wool producers in the matter of the truth ln la fabrics bill and his total apathy concerning the fight for fair freight rates tor for the tain states his thoughts are thoughts not of the west but of 0 the east III alg accent has that 0 of the east and not of the tha west his boast Is not that he is a senator of utah but that he Is a senator of the united states and atef the world 5 we ve deplore the senior senators utter atter lack of interest in and his failure allure to prepare tor for utah a share of federal benefits which is fair lor compared som Om pared wit obtained by other western states either in the matter of reclamation or for other purposes and this notwithstanding the vast area bof io government lands in this state policed and protected by our taxpayers also his failure tor for the 24 years that he has haa been a senator to procure the obviously fair legislation necessary to protect the rights of the state aud and its school funds to the public lands granted the state of utah in the en abling act and awe we commend governor dern for his efficient and effective work in stirring up and uniting the western states in support of such legislation as will effectively clarity clarify the states title to these lands I 1 we favor making a determined claim tor for all the vacant public lands within the state surveyed and and will heartily join all other western public land states to secure this natural right texas retained title to all its lauds upon admission and the eastern and middle states have contributed an insignificant amount to the federal public land funds it is therefore up ign equal and unjust tor for the federal government to claici the public lands in the western states 6 we condemn the financial control of 0 this government by selfish financial interests who use us it to swell their own fortunes at the expense of the people of this and other states interests that by the use of money corrupt and control elections and public officials and stifle the sources of 0 information and publicity we disapprove and regret t the he close affiliation and sympathetic support given to such interests by our senior senator his support of mellon and his aluminum trust and his vote against the motion of senator walsh february ar y 6 1926 to investigate invest igata the marges charges against the said trust the investigation of which had been suppressed by the department ot of justice upon the excuse that they could not obtain access to the records his vote on may 5 1924 called tor for a redaction of 0 tax eson large incomes and tn la opposition to the SIM hynons substitute providing for a reduction in taxes on small and moderate erate incomes his bis vote against the jones amendment may 17 1921 which would have lowered the tax on corporations making legitimate profits and increased the tha tax on profiteering fite ering corporations corPoration tg the ahe senior senator voting tor for the profiteers hla his vote on february 12 1926 to repeal a sensible substitute tor for var 9 we note with satisfaction I 1 that the intelligent voters of 0 other agricultural states including iowa I 1 illinois and oregon shave already I 1 by their votes eliminated their soi called administration se senators who have supported this order of arid and this pernicious control against their interests and the interests of 0 the people in general wedo not believe that tile the voters of the state ot of utah are less intelligent or that they can ho be longer i tooled fooled by the agents of the predatory interests whose purposes senator sedot has served and whose game he has played calling him a 1 great man or by his own till fill some admission of greatness buoyant self pr praise alse is abw always a als suspicious it is too often used to divert attention from and up a failure of duty of which its perpetrator pe is s conscious 10 wo we regret the consistent opposition by the so called administration senators including the senior senator from this state to every effort tio bo alleviate the condition of the farmers and his failure during the last session to support any legislation prop proposed ased by them and his vote on march 8 1926 to sell muscle shoals the government plant to the power trust without any adequate guaranty that the farri farmers lers would obtain fertilizer there at reasonable rates 11 it is time tr fr a change it Is time tor for and we ve favor the selection vt of a senator who has not lost interest in his own state slate a really big man inan big in mind and big in heart on whose services will consist in procuring legislation favora ble to the struggling people ot of this state and not primarily in the interest ot of the financial institutions of the east who need it least 12 to this end we pledge our candidate to work for the reduction ot of government expenditures to the lowest possible limit to balork in the interest of oe his state and ot of state rights and local self government and i t free and untrammeled and uncontrolled exercise of power by the voters 13 the tariff has become and is an problem local to each state and its industries with the representatives and senators ot of each state whether democratic or reppa lican seeking to protect their own industries this being the condition it is but the part of common sense and we pledge our candidates to seek protection tor for the producers ot of our own state on any and all products and industries which are or may be jeopardized by the importation por tation ct cf the products ot of cheap clabor i labor front from foreign favorable for the handling and sellig of their export sti surplus we have no sympathy with the idea that an export corporation or other governmental assistance may be readily invoked in the interest
