Show letter From MihdKVKRT fcT th 0D1 EVENING, SmidHjs excepted POBUBkUNa COIQAMT. Charlea W. Penrose, Editor a Business ad Manner. OUDKX. IT VII. Wednesday Evening, January 21,'74. THE OCDEJf IROS WORKS. A limited amount of stock in the Ogden Iron Manufacturing Company and is reserved for those of our titizens, who may wish to avail themselves of the advantages offered in lending encouragement to a laudable and praiseworthy enterprise. The great success which has attended the project of erecting iron works in this city, and expanding the resources which are within our grasp, is a flattering tribute te the public Bpirifc of all who have identified themselves with the movement from its inception to the present time. Yet much can be done to further the prospects of the Company and promote the object which it has in view. The bulk of the Btock is taken by capitalists, who fully realize the advantages, which must accrue to themselves in investing their means to promote manufacturing and mining interests iu this section. Capital is always timid, aud the surest guarantee of the success of the Company is in the fact that within a short time, its stock hna been eagerly sought for, and the subscriptions have exhausted the greatest part of the principal called for. Ogden has not been remiss in its contributions, but as yet it represents but a small .'fraction of the total amount of capital authorized under its charter. The Company desires to see the city and community, which are mainly interested in the enterprise, so thoroughly identified with it that it may be looked upon hot as a foreign speculation but as a home institution. The business men of OgdenT the property holders, and all who have at heart tho growth and prosperity of the city, in which their fortunes and destinies are cast, should evince a . spirit of p'rida in giving aid and encouragement to those who- are deveting their means and energy in building up Ogden, whose wealth is yet slumbering, and only one strong effort to urge it forward to a brilliant future. ia yet undisposed ofv non-reside- nt - - A The Utah Legislature. The notice which yon gave of the dedication of the Methodist church in your last issue was by no means a gaiinfactorjr ae I ant: in the habit of allowing euch low slang to pass unnoticed but while upon the street this morning I was urged by a number of te persons among them reply to your disrespectful notices of our success in this city If you would have confined yourself to the truth there would " be no room for a reply from me ' Your let falsehood is not a small one. I hardly thought a man of your standing in the "only true and much laved church of God" capable of such an Invention. I quote "Before the termination of each service the doors were closed at the instance of Mr Pierce" I call upon you to recant and if there is a single mark of a christian linked in your daily life you will gladly and willingly do so Again you Bay "The most shameless begging, amounting to dqwnright impudence and extortion, was resorted to." I assert this to be as base a falsehood as was ever allowed to appear in any paper I admit that we did insist upon our own people to help ns liquidate the debt upon the church which they did cheerfully I think The followers of Brigbam were not asked for money nor did they give any I ask which is the worst to beg the people to give or compel the poor classes to pay yearly one tenth part of their little increase. Which do you look upon ) being the worst to beg the people to give te a church already erected finished and furnished or compel them to give for a temple for which money was collected 25 years ago and is now being collected for the same purpose while the Temple stands but a few feet above the ground witft no probability of its ever being completed I will leave the answer with the people. You may tell me the mime of the church which is practicing the most extortion in Utah. My advise is sweep before your own door for you will find enough dirt to employ all of your time from this on. Verily you have condescended beneath the dignity ot a man to say nothing of a gentleman and from what I have learned you have brought yourself more fully than ever before to stand in a ridio-ulou- s light before all good citizens including many of your own faith., I will further say that if you can prove to us your right to prescribe for the Methodist ohurch we will give the matter our earliest attention. , Your assault upon Mr. Pierce was uncomcalled for as well as dastardly-Youpliment upon myself unappreciated The people have our sincerest thanks for their timely aid.
