Exits Soon Cut Off. The Are broke out at 7:15 a. m. in the upper stories of the building and elec-I elec-I trie bells immediately sounded the I alarm in all the rooms. Wood and h- daughter, proprietors of the West .-.otel. were both rescued.', the latter being carried down In safety. A Thrilling Rescue. One of the most thrilling rescues was that of F. A. Chamberlain of the Security Se-curity bank and members of his family who were not awakened in time to make their escape by the usual exits. For many' anxious minutes they remained' re-mained' at their window In the top story at the Fifth street and Hennepin avenue corner. - Mr. 'Chamberlain gathered bedding and made a rope and at the same time the extension ladders were being placed Into position, but were found too short. Fireman Scales Ladder. The Pompier ladders were 1 then rushed to the scene and a fireman with a 'rope about him firmly placed and scaled- the' ladder to the cheers of thousands thou-sands of spectators. Arriving at the window, he took one after the other, lowered them safely to the extension ladder, two stories beneath, by means of the rope, where they were brought to safety. The rescue was accomplished amid death-like silence when the fireman reached the window. When the last person had been lowered and the fireman fire-man followed, the cheering broke loose. Tails to His Death. Capt. John Berwln was carrying a woman down a scaling ladder when the terrified woman tried to Jump to a window win-dow ledge. Capt. Berwln thereupon lost his balance, falling seven stories to his death. The woman was caught by a fireman. |
