Show the april issue of the utah taxpayer may be called a school number it first calls attention to a challenging statement by dr H S prichett of the carnegie foundation for the advancement of teaching where the question Is raised respecting the results of our present educational system from the standpoint of producing an intelligent citizenship and the development of character important statistics reveal the unusual growth of school expenditures this Is given by school districts the variation in per capita costs presents an astounding study worthy of the consideration of every taxpayer and especially of every board of education in this state even in adjoining counties the widest disparity exists in school costs the utah taxpayer asks that this difference be analyzed to determine the reasons the general expenditures for the last 14 years have increased over teachers salaries have grown within the last eight years from to A comparative tabulation sets forth the expenditures by school districts for the last fiscal year this shows the same wide dlf ference based on school population and average dally attendance the taxpayer also calls attention to the fact that the school board and not the school superintendent Is to the taxpayer for maintaining economy in public schools and that they must not shift the to their appointees it Is urged that no precipitate cuts be made in teachers salaries but that by process of elimination the weaker members of the staff can be taken out of the school system and even better pay given those who survive the test of efficiency school boards are also asked to study the teacher load to determine how many pupils in each class to combine classes where small classes are found to exist t Is discovered that in one school als brict alone by adding two pupils per teacher 25 teachers can be justly withdrawn from service saving the taxpayers of that community the whole issue Is alive with valuable instructive information on our school situation |
