Show THAT AUDIENCE. Hon. B. H. Roberts tells of the mighty audience audi-ence which listened while Joseph F. Smith testified testi-fied before a senate committee last week. He did, indeed, hve a great audience; it might be said that the millions of American people listened, to him. But what did they hear? They heard that in a sovereign state of this Republic there was in control an organization the head of which gloried in the confession that he had established a harem In that state and that in the face of the laws, tho laws, of the state, the nation, and of civilization, he was maintaining this harem. It is certain that the American people heard and when the evidence Js all in they will realize that not only has polygamy poly-gamy been planted in Utah, but with it just such another despotism as ruled in Asia when Solomon was in all his glory and when the man was everything, the people nothing. This is not in Asia, not on some semi-civilized island in far-off Beas, but right in the midst of this Republic which waB by the fathers dedicated to freedom and to the American home. When the people reflect over that they will think further how they welcomed Utah into tbe Union, they will think of the promises mado to secure statehood, and if in the revulsion which will follow they do not, through their representatives in Congress, decree that no more Latter-pay Saints shall hold any office of honor or profit under the Government of the Republic, thqn we mistake the spirit of our countrymen. There are limitations to national as woll as to individual patience. Ask Mr. Roberts Rob-erts what would be done with a priest of this kingdom if news were to come that he was deriding derid-ing and seeking to undermine the authority of the Mormon church, and when arraigned and Placed upon the witness stand he were to admit the charge and plead a divine command as an excuse. How long would he last in his priestly office? How lpng, then, should one of this organization organ-ization be in a position to help make laws for Jree Americans? The hearing has been Iedaway from Apostle Smoqt;; the church is on trial now., Does Mr. Roberts feel comfortable over the pios pect? |
