Dons add two more wins John Jackson STAFF WRITER The varsity baseball team continued their hot play with wins over two quality baseball teams. On their home field, the Dons were able to beat the highly successful Cottonwood baseball team that was ranked number one in 4A. Then the Dons went on the road and got their second win in a week over a good Springville team. Pitching has carried the Dons so far this season, but there are some positive signs at the plate. Junior Taggart Lunceford has caught fire. The defensively sound catcher showcased his offensive skills by going 5-5 in the two games with four RBI's. Kade Christensen was solid intEe'DH spot with two hits and two RBI's. Spanish Fork 5 Cottonwood 2 (at SF) Fans were a little nervous early on as the Colts did not waste much time in getting a run on the board. A leadoff walk, followed by a pick off play gone bad, left a runner on third with only one out. A sac fly later and the Colts were up 1-0. In the bottom of the inning the Dons threatened when leadoff men Damon Ward and Kirt Daley got on base, but the meat of the Don lineup all went down on strikes ending the threat. Senior Devin Nelson then carried the Dons on the mound with his high-powered fastball. The only other run Cottonwood would score came in the third when a walk and a base hit allowed one to cross. Nelson threw five innings while allowing only one hit and striking out four. The Dons tied the game in the second inning when Kade Christensen hit a double. Pinch runner Jacob Clark scored when Taggart Lunceford got his first RBI of the day. Adam Duke pitched the final two innings giving up one hit and striking out two. Duke picked up the win after the Dons got the bats going in the sixth inning. Tyler Hanks led the inning off with a walk, and then gave way to pinch runner Trevor Randolph. Randolph scored when the hit-andrun was put on for Brock Duke. Duke laced a line drive to the right field fence for a triple. Gentry Mitchell knocked Duke in when he hit a single to right field. Michael Hayes drew a walk to set the stage for Lunceford to come through again. The left-handed- hitting Lunceford drilled a double over the left fielder's head to score Mitchell and Hayes and give the Dons a comfortable 5-2 victory. After the game Coach Shoe complimented his catcher by saying, "Taggart is one of the hardest working players we have. He worked hard all fall. It is nice to see the hard work pay off. I am very happy for him."
