One day I returned home and someone had given It to them. "They were delljrhted and amuaed and It took an untold burden from my shoulders The dog has been a guardian and a playmate to them. Then the coat of living grew and grew. It seemed that we never had any money at the end of the month. My husband la a hard working man and yet. like many others, we have not caught up to tha soaring cost of the necensltlea of life. "Well one day the dog catcher came and demanded the license and there waa no money to pay him. 1 begged him to let us keep the dog until we could pay it. The next month several more things we had to have had gone up In price and the money I had figured fig-ured on using to pay the tax waa used up. At last when I aaw that we could not pay the tax I decided to give the dor away." Here tears came into the tired eyes and In a stifled voice she continued: "I could not bear to let the children know and ao when I found a lady I knew who would be kind to it I told her she mlrht as well take it. I gave It to her when the children were asleep. Now they are brokenhearted, but there is no hope of our being able to pay the tax. If you will only get me a position I will be glad to work out the money we owe for the past montha, hut my buaband cannot work any more than he does now." The rase was continued. " |
