Programs in which vocational instructors cooperate with local employers formulating their instructional courses to best meet the demands of the local job market, but there is undoubtedly opportunity to broaden this concept. The State Legislature is in a position to enhance the success of a vocational education-busines"marriage," and has, in fact, shown its willingness to participate in such ventures through industrial training prothe state's "Custom-Fitgram. Recognition of the value in striving toward such goals is now left to leaders in the business and industrial segment of our society. The Salt Lake Valley's business and industrial interests would do well to seize an opportunity to further enhance their relationship with the educa- development picture. Having focused heavily on the state's economic development during his campaign for the gubernatorial post, Bangerter is now taking steps toward following through, advocating that a "responsive educational sy$3m that prepares students for productive employment must remain a strong priority in state planning for economic So how do you pick a winner? I felt the lure, the pull of the river life and empathized with the captain who said, I went to California, taught school and planned to make my life there. But I couldnt get The River out of my soul and so came back home. If you want local ties, how about former Bingham high star Bruce Hardy, a tight end whose number has been called frequently during the playoffs by Miami. San Francisco has three former in Todd BYU Cougars and an Shell, Bill Ring, Tom Holmoe and Carl Monroe. The spotlighted players in this one are the two quarterbacks. And the Niner offense aint bad. Nor is the Dolphin D, known as the Killer Bees. Coaching? Theyre two of the best. San Franciscos Bill Walsh has won a Super Bowl end was one of the most highly respected college mentors while at Stanford, which incidentally is where the Super Bowl is being played. Don Shula will be guiding his troops to a sixth Super Bowl. How about their season records? Maybe theres a clue there. San Francisco is now counting the playoffs. If it comes down to the running game - and few expect it to - San Francisco has a decided edge with Wendell Tylers 1,365 yards equal to those by the top two Dolphins, neither of which total the 727 by San Franciscos Roger Craig. But in receiving, Miami makes its mark with Mark Clayton totaling 1,559 yards and Mark Duper 1,486, while Dwight Clark had 1,075 for SF. Sacks, interceptions and other big defensive plays rate virtually even and the experts have rated the offensive lines even and give the Niners a slight edge in the defensive line. Its just impossible to say one tea m is better than the other. Which should make for a heckuva show Sunday. Ive got my annual Souper Bowl party lined up, complete with chili and clam chowder. We just plan to enjoy it. Actually, I really dont care who wins. I dont hate either team and neither is my absolute favorite, though both are in the top five. Im going to go out on a limb and say San Francisco will win. Not by much -perhaps three points. But I think Ill just keep my dollar in my pocket this year. First though, the committee has to and had better realize that the g general public, are fed up with constant tax raises, and are not only at about their patience end, but also at the end of what their income is affordable to them. School boards, politicians, committees, must start to understand people can no longer continue being burdened with tax raises each and every time someones well runs dry. Secondly, this committee must face the hard facts that the bulk of should be placed responsibility where it derives from. This means they should study the feasibility of shifting the taxation to each household with school aged children and they in turn be responsible for the burden of their education. This is a fact that has to be faced sooner or later and should be now as later. Third, with reference to this above paragraph, why should taxpayers who have no children or whose children are no longer in the school ranks still have to bear the major responsibility for the education of others through tax or more tax payments. This should be reverted more as a family responsibility also to generate more revenue. Fourth, another factor that has to be very seriously considered by the committee is: Are other means and facil-- , itles Available that would serve this same purpose? Around Christmas, all the advertising for expensive toys really does an injustice to those who either cant afford the toys or choose not to indulge their kids. Ive learned to say no to my kids, but advertising makes it harder. I think a lot of things are misrepresented in childrens adver- tising. The networks censor lots of the When it commercials already. comes to advertising sugar cereals and toys to little kids, parents should help make the decisions and not expect the network to. But I think there are enough crazy ideas around that we dont need more suggestions on TV to drink. The ads are funny to watch, but there are too many on during prime time. I think they should limit advertising to children. Kids want enough things as it is. When my kids were younger, they wanted everything they saw. Usually the fancy things advertised on TV are expensive, but they break easily and dont hold kids attention. I dont think beer should be advertised on TV, or if it is, it shouldnt be during prime time. JCOUPONL I think advertisers should have plenty of freedom, but I dont think they should advertise things that arent good for you, especially during childrens programs. The commercials for beer, for example, are e and entertaining, always but they push the product too hard and make kids think you have to drink beer to have fun. well-mad- Mobile Resorts Pre-openin- Good Thru Only $70.00 a month on a 2 year prepaid lease $90.00 a month ' on a 1 year prepaid lease $115.00 a month PizzaiTimeiTheatre "Com w fat et loh Oul fa tid&dtimed Gieal Dea!
