The University of1 Utah is actively engaged in a space program that calls for 25 locket and satallite launchings in 1962 at a cost of one-hamillion dollars. The Upper Air Research Laboratory at the school Is under contract with the Air Forces Cambridge Research Laboratories. The construction of tiny aluminum shelled spheres designed to measure the density of the atmosphere and special impedence probes to measure electron densities is headed by Professor Obed Haycock. It is hoped the probe packages seven inches in diameter, weighing four pounds will help chart the paths of space travel. The falling sphere experiment as it is referred to measures conditions in the upper atmosphere from 20 to 80 out. miles Impedence prolies start at 40 miles. Rockets and satellites are used to transport the instrument capsules to their work location. The last launch made several weeks ago with a Nike Cajun rocket originated at Egland Air Force Base in Florida. The test measured atmospheric density from 400,-00- 0 down to 100,000 feet. When the rocket reached an altitude of 200,000 feet the seven-inc- h sphere containing telemetry instruments and a acceleratometer was ejected from the nose cone. The sphere continued upward to 600,000 feet or 100 miles'. As it descended, its relative deceleration caused by atmospheric drag was measured and telemetered to tracking stations. Professor Haycock says ,we are obtaining data of importance to all experiments in outer space. "We like to feel, he said, that in some way we contributed to the successful orbital flight of Colonel John Glenn, Jr. Professor Haycock has been working 15 years in .electrical and mechanical engineering to measure gas and electron density on the frontier of space. He says the space work has been excellent for the University in several ways. It has provided experience for faculty members 'and has furnished employment and thesis material for undergraduate students or those worklf some of fied. When asked about space probes around the moon, Professor Haycock quipped, First things first. Were only concerned with the epace thq earth at the present time. Featured in the 1962 program are eight discoverer and five Midas satellite packages. The highest shot will be with a Blue Scout Junior rocket aimed at an altitude of from 15,000 to 20,000 miles. The space research projects at the University of Utah have obtained much valuable geophysical data besides being a valuable aid to education.
