By Janey Ilokett If therei one thing the study of history teaches us, its that were not alone that thens "nothing new under the sun." The same questions and problems seem to pop up over and over again. For example: the west Uintah County school question. Look at all the pain, anger and frustration reflected on both sides of the issue. It reminds me of a situation that Roosevelt faced shortly after Duchesne County seceded from Wasatch County. - In 1876, the Interior Department hired a man named Dubois to survey the Great Basin ;i.Vl establish the meridian (longitude and latitude) markers. When Utah became a state, the boundary between Wasatch county and Uintah County was set at the 1 lOtif meridian. However, in the eurlyM'gOOs a new survey was completed using more advanced techniques and newer technolo It was found that the 110 meridian was actually 1 38 miles further west than established by Dubois. Guess what! Hist put Roosevelt in Uintah County and created political havoc. People residing in Roosevelt were, technically, illegally voting in Duchesne County elections. Did that invalidate all those elections? The new high school, paid far by Duchesne County citizens, was now completely behind the Uintah County line. To make matters worse, Duchesny County officials didnt seem to upset over losing 1. Every election in Duchesne County is illegal because Uintah people voted. 2. Ray Dillman, County Attorney, Craig Harmston, County Surveyor. and Roy Wilkins, If, all residing in Roosevelt, are holding office in Duchesne Co. illegally. (Employees of the county were required to live in Duchesne County.) 3. The new Duchesne County High School is situated in Uintah County. The people voted to bond themselves $35,000 for this school, the bonds are illegal since the school is in Uintah County and the Duchesne people had no right to vote bonds outside their county. Neither county can now lay claim to this school and the sensible thing for both counties to do is make it a joint county high school. 4. All court derisions concerning people or land may have to be modified. 5. All deeds and abstracts which have been filed in Duchesne County will have to be refiled in this (Uintah) county. This solution to this problem played a large part in the problems we face today. Next week: Washingtons answer to the boundary dispute. If you have any interesting stories contact me at 9 or co this paper. I appreciate the calls ana. letters Ive been receiving. Donna Brown called and said that her father, Franklin Thompson had two sisters, Minnie and Maud from Creek whom the Minni and school district received their names. Now we know. Thanks Donna! Question: During the first part of the century, L.D.8. Stake President Smart led a movement to change the name of many of the towns in Duchesne County. Why? Roosevelt The people affected by this change wars hurt, angry, ana frustrated much as the rendents of west Uintah County are today. The fallowing letter appeared in Standard and a copy was sent to the U.S. Attorney General. September 8, 1915. Roosevelt is still on the map but we hardly know what map. Are we in Uintah - seems that every so often that question comes up. Dont (sic) Duchesne County want us? As far as the Standard is concerned, we would rather be in Uintah County for the simple reason that taxes are much lower. The taxes in Roosevelt are about 63 mills while in Uintah county they are 33 mills. They now tell us the 110th meridian is 1 38 miles west of the point heretofore known as the county line. That would take in all of Roosevelt to the Jas. Sabey line, the assessment valuation of this property being in the neighborhood of $268,000. The import of this decision is far reaching and creates a muddle such as either of these counties has never before experienced. The affected strip of land is 1 38 miles wide and extends the entire width of the county, 105 12 miles in length involving mare than 130 sq. miles of territory. The correct line is 224 feet east of the center of section 4.
