Show DAVIS REFLEX-JOURNA- FEBRUARY 19, 1986 Page 5 sports, Local wrestler do well at state meet K AYSVILLE - Northern Davis County once again showed their shining worth in the state wrestling tournament by seeing two of the three high schools Finish -- 4-- A among the top seven prep teams in that bracket. H)K THE past couple of years now this area has put themselves on the map in the world of high school wrestling. Davis High finished with 90'2 points to get a sixth place finish. The Darts, who were under the direction of Jeff Isom this season, finished just two points out of fifth place where Box Elder finally ended up. They were only 3'i points out of fourth as Alta took that spot. Finishing third this year was Taylorsville and second was the host school, West Jordan. And once again, without much surprise, was Bengals of Brighton High. RIGHT BEHIND the Darts this year was Scott Tennis Clearfield Falcons who ended up with 841: points. Layton, coached by the veteran Mike Hansen, took up the 14th spot this year with 32': points. There were no state champs among the three schools this year, w hich was unusual. At least one of the three schools has been able to come up with a winner over the past few years. CLEARFIELDS John Walters came the closest however as he took second in the 108 pound category, losing to Matt Castel in the finals. It was the second straight year that Walters finished among the top four in the state tournament. Davis three heavies all finished in third place this season, all of 5-- w 3 hich culminated a fine season for them and the school. FIRST IT was Rob Warden, a junior, taking third at 170 where he beat out Troy Sargent of Bingham for third place. Warden will be 9-- 7 one of the key people back next year for the Darts. Next to finish third was Blake 188. Hart, who missed last seasons action because of injuries, made a spectacular showing in his final season as a Davis Dart. He won the region title and finally ended up beating Brian Syddall of Granger 10-- 2 for third place in the room 26 in the Gymnastics-Danc- e in the Parks and Recreation Building, 437 Wasatch Drive from 8 entire state. 4-- 2. THE ONLY other Dart to place in the top six was 148 pounder, Mark Anderson who beat Ron Ricks of Alta to take fifth place. It was a good year for Anderson who competed in a very difficult weight class this year. Layton Highs only state placer happened to be their Paul Arguello. Arguello comes from a school rich in wrestling history and he failed to let his coach down as he beat Greg Godfrey of Brighton 5 to take third place on Saturday night. 7-- to 5 THE SPRING session will run 3 to for eleven weeks, from March May 16. The cost is $15. For more information call 544-345- 8. THE LADY Falcons clobbered to stay perfect at Layton LEADING THE way for the Davis team last week was Nancy Kirkpatrick who tossed in 19 points in the win over East. Nancy scored 29 in the victory over Viewmont. Heather Peel tossed in 17 points in the win over East High. 0 in Region One. Dana Huffer went wild for Clearfield as she scored 26 points on Laytons court last Friday afternoon. Meanwhile in Kaysville, the a single word in the dictionary ITS UNSELFISH. You dont have to go any further to find words to talk to the senior athlete who right now is helping lead the Dart basketball team to one of school's finest basketball years in its heralded history. THE FOREMOST thing that comes to mind when talking about said Greg is his unselfishness, Coach John Robison. He is so perceptive of the things he has to do to make us successful. Theres a desire there to sacrifice the attention that comes from scoring and other things to get the job done in assists and on defense. The fans who watch the slender 2 forward can appreciate what Coach Robison feels. Night after night hes the one who will draw the toughest defensive assignment and no one on the team likes to find the open man more than he. After 17 games hes just a few total assists behind the team leader, Chris Card. BUT GREG can score too. It just happens that hes on a team blessed with outstanding shooters who have their role to play in that area. But Greg knows his role as well and never lets anyone down. Even if you watch Greg in practice, continued Robison, He never shoots out of his range there or in games. He knows exactly how far out he can go. 6-- nt mark." ANOTHER thing that Robison appreciates from Willard is his uncanny ability to provide a stabili-zin- e Hes not a capleadership. tain but I believe he does have a stabilizing effect on the rest of the team which is one very good reason why this club has been as successful as they have this year. Without the kind of leadership Greg has given us this year, and without his abilities, we probably would have lost a lot more than just one game, said Robison. Willard, who was also a fine receiver and defensive back on the Darts state final team last fall, left early Monday morning of this week with a few of his teammates to see what his chances were with a football stint at Snow College. THROUGH THE gridiron season he averaged 21.9 yards per catch, a respectable statistic in itself. But the most important catch of his life was a in the waning moments of the Mountain View game, a touchdown pass reception that hurdled the Darts over Mountain View and into the semifinals. Willard is also a spring trackman. In fact he feels that if he were to receive an athletic scholarship of any kind, it might come from his efforts in the high jump. As a sophomore he placed sixth in the ranks and as a junior finished two rungs higher at fourth. Both years he netted jumps of 6 feet 4 inches. HAS THE basketball season been a dream come true for Willard? Yea, I think it is in a way. Of course its not over yet though. We really want to finish with the region title if were good enough. er 4-- A BUT AT the same time Im surprised at how well weve done this year, me. doesnt overwhelm it really Were all WILLARD also stated that some of his maturity has come from his own personal decision to maintain certain values. The drugs and things some people use help them through the day at hand, but it does nothing for their future. I'm trying to do things each day that will help build a fu- a pretty close bunch of kids, all six of us have been friends for a long, long time. And weve done some things together, like going back to Memphis last year and doing well against great teams who averaged 7 and 9 all the way across. Deep down inside I knew we had the ability to go quite a long ways in our senior year," said Willard. About his role with the club, Willard said hed do whatever itt takes to get the job done. 6-- 6-- ture for myself," Willard con- tinued. THE DAVIS athlete gave a ton of credit to the Davis High coaches as a whole for instilling in him a desire to set a high standard of values. "The coaches at our school are terrific. In fact after we lost in the state football finals last fall, we got together as a team and talked about how special they are. They really care about us, more than they care about their own personal things, he said. ITS FUN enough just trying to beat Chris (Card) in assists, said Willard, If Mike (Taylor), Jon (Rees) and Brent (Meier) are hitting, then let them keep hitting. Most people would have to agree that weve found a pretty good formula this season, so why change it. I like the challenge of defending the opponents best big man. 1 always try to give it my best shot even though in this region there are some very talented big guys. WILLARDS coach in football, Jim Dickson, voiced that Greg is the kind of kid any parent would want their son to grow up to be like. Robison said almost the same thing too. Dickson further stated, "Greg's worth to us in football was far greater than most people realized. He not only caught the ball, but he was a terrific blocker. Had we won the state title, maybe Greg would have got the same kind of attention Weber's (Jon) Fuller got. Greg did a. great job for us in the playoffs. DEFENDING against those big guys can bring on some pretty tense moments at times, but as Coach Robison has noticed all season, Greg is consistent in handling the tough times from everything to even keeping the same kind of facial expression. How is he so consistent? MAYBE I can give some credit to the football season because there is where I got a lot of playing time in critical situations. Compared to basketball, I haven't had that much experience. The tenseness never got more GREG WORKED hard all last summer in and out of the weight room and his contributions were numerous. But despite that he didn't get as much ink as other kids did. It just demonstrates his unselfishness a little more because he never said anything, but just went out and did his job. After the job was done, he just went home. meaningful than in the Mountain View game. But I wanted to be out there, in the thick of the battle. I believe the desire to be in critical situations and my ability to handle some of the pressure, has carried over into basketball. I really besaid lieve football helped me, Willard. THE COACHES here love that kind of a kid, in fact anyone would. 69-4- 4-- 7-- Bountiful Counseling Don't and Psychotherapy Gamble on Your Future - Open an IRA Today South Davis Credit Union i Children, Youth, and Family Therapy Marital Conciliation and Enrichment Psychological Evaluations Building Self Esteem Kerry W. Horne was at 188 for most of last season and he liked the move to heavyweight in his senior season. He also won the region title and captured third place in state by pinning Justin Jones of Brighton in first round action last Saturday night at West Jordan High School. Other Darts to place last Saturday night included Justin Julander in the 101 Category. It was a disappointment for Julander to not make the finals after he made those same finals just a year ago.
