Show . it Red Devils in stale lournomestf by Craig Conover Springville vs Cedar City, Spanish, and Carbon. Car-bon. . After the Devils suffered suf-fered a last-second loss to the Spanish Fork Dons, they were forced to win their last home game against the Cedar City Redmen, in order to get into the state tournament. They accomplished this task very easily with so much at stake. The only time it looked like the Redmen might be a match for the high flying Devils was when they took the opening tip and got off to a 4-0 lead, but this was the last time the Redmen were to see their team on top. It was a team effort for the Devils with most everyone on the bench getting to play in the 76-68 win for the Devils. The Devils were able to come out in the second half and hit five unanswered baskets to give them a 21-point 21-point lead and the win. The Redmen were able to make the score closer when the Devils benched the starters in the last quarter. High scorer for this game was Lawrence Wiscombe with 18 points. After this game the Devils were forced to go into a playoff with Spanish Fork and Carbon. Carbon drew the bye for the first night and would in turn play the loser of the first game for the third place in the region at Salina. So the tide was set once again a week later for the Devils to get revenge on the Dons at Spanish Fork last Friday night. This was not to be the case though, for the Red Devils of Springville. The Devils got off to a quick 8-2 8-2 lead, Bert McClain hitting from 15 and Randy Graham getting a lay-in and Lawrence Wiscombe adding four of his own. This was the last the Devils were to see the lead for the Dons finally found the mark and they were able to come up with 11 unanswered points and had a 17-11 lead at the end of one. It was finally Sheldon Phillips' bullseye shooting that enabled the Devils to put themselves back into the game at the half. He hit on three separate occasions from 15 feet and beyond to put the Devils 30-31 at the half. But the Dons just weren't going to give in and came out with four quick points and Springville's big man Pete Anderson was forced to sit out much of the third quarter after picking up his 4th personal foul 15 seconds into the half. This, along with some costly turnovers, caused the Devils to play comeback ball the rest of the game. The Devils had a few chances going down the wire with the Dons missing on two one and one occasions'' but the Devils were unable to capitalize on them, and fell prey to the Dons 67-61 for the third time this year. High scorer for the game was Kurt Christensen with 21; next high was Lawrence Wiscombe with 20 for the Devils. This loss put the Devils on the road for their next ;ame against the Carbon BIGGER & BIGGER REDUCTIONS SMI values to $34.00 fHM. Dinos to be played at North Sevier High in Salina. The Devils seemed to want this one and "they got it in another spectacular game much like the last time they played the Dinos at Springville with a 81-67 win. Thanks to the super shooting of Lawrence Wiscombe and David Nemelka who combined Stewart Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nelson, had 17 points and his best game in play against Cedar City last week. He was named Junior of the Week. &&:i::;:S::?:::::: tt-vxy&ssss.-:-: fe.v:-:::; : Lawrence Wiscombe puts up one for two of his 30 points against the Carbon Dinos in last Saturday's playoff game. They didn't play the usual slow down and wait for the good shot offense, but came right down the floor and hit the open man and Chris Holmes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Holmes, was named Prep of the Week for his play in the game against Cedar City. The Dinos only posed a threat once in the game when they pulled within five at 63-58 with four minutes to play. Pete Anderson also fouled out at this time and it looked like the Devils might be in trouble, but this was not to be the case. The Devils just started up their fire again and with Blaine Bird hitting two foul pitches at the 2:41 mark and Mike Cronquist getting a fast break lay-in at 2:11, it put the Devils out of reach of the Dinos with the game becoming a foul shooting exhibition for the Devils as the Dinos were forced to foul going down the wire. High scorers for the game were Lawrence Wiscombe with an amazing 30 points and 14 rebounds and David Nemelka with 23 points. In the three games combined, Wiscombe had 68 points. This finished out the Devils regular season and they will try their luck at the state tournament.
