The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 3 From small beginnings come great blessings It's hard to believe that little Jake Hansen, son of Rory and Cari Hansen of Mayfield, is now 3 months old and doing well. On March 18th Jake was born at 430 grams but soon after birth lost 50 grams which translates to 15 ounces and then 13 ounces. He is the 4th smallest baby to ever live at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He is a miracle to his parents each and every day. In the past three months Jake has gained 2 lbs. 6 ounces. He now weighs 3 lbs. 5 ounces and is 14 V2 inches long. Jake has endured a few surgeries since birth. At 15 days old he underwent heart surgery to repair a hole in his heart that wouldn't close up on its own and was causing multiple problems throughout his little body. Last Friday, Jake's retinas were in danger of detaching so the doctors performed emergency surgery to save his eye sight. By doing so, he did end up losing most of his peripheral vision, but they were able to save 70% of his eye sight. Jake has one major surgery left. He has 2 hernias the size of a tennis ball that need to be repaired. The bowel surgeon is located at Primary Children's Medical Center and has been following Jake's case since the hernias started to occur back in March. He said he hasn't seen hernias this large on a 3 pound baby before so this is uncharted territory for him. Jake needs to be 2,000 grams before the hospital will operate on his hernias, and last night he weighed in at 1513 grams, so right now they are playing the waiting game. The doctors are sensitive to really give a date of when Jake will come home but they are expecting it to be no sooner than late September. They project that at that time Jake will be 6 months old and around 5 pounds. ourtesy oto Jake Hansen, son of Rory and Carl Hansen of Mayfield. Rory and Cari would like to thank everyone for all of the prayers and well wishes for their family. "We know that all your prayers have worked and that we couldn't have gone through this without the love and support from all our friends and family. We have a new saying in our home, `From small beginnings come great blessings!' We believe this with all our heart and hope to one day be able to share our little miracle with all of you! Thank you!"
