Show !THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2001 PA~ES UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS.NEWS Convocation features award winning author BY LISA GRADY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER New York University research scholar, Roger Newman, will address the subject of internet censorship at Convocation today. Newman, author of the book Sex, Censorship and the Internet, is a well known award winning author. He qualified as a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his biography on Chief Justice Hugo Stack, one of the most controversial and influential Supreme Court justices of the 20th century. Newman's book R0ger presents the first Newrna,, full-scale biography of Black-a portrait of a fascinating and important figure and his impact on the country. The book was more than a decade in the making and drew upon an astonishing array of sources, including Black's family papers, to which N"ewman had exclusive access, and more than 1,000 interviews. Newman has been a great admirer of Black since he read his opinions in 1967 as a student in a course on civil liberties. Newman is also the editor of a fourvolume encyclopedia of the constitutional amendments and is currently working on a book about school prayer. In addition to writing, Newman has made more than 70 media appearances, including NPR and "Entertainment Tonight." Internet censorship is a topic of significant interest and one that has reared its head at SUU . Neal Cox, dean of students, said that is what led the Convocation committee to invite Newman to speak. Cox said, "Our particular interest in bringing him here is interest in the internet. .. [and sbme] efforts [that] are being made to filter it..: Cox said Newman should give a good overview on this controversial subject. Cox encourages all students and community members to attend the convocation series, "its a great place to have your horizons lifted," he said.
