' Several unique experiences experi-ences will be offered at the monument to help commemorate commem-orate both the history of the .National Park Service and the Monument, according to officials. Visitors can start their day with free admittance into American Fork Canyon. Tickets for cave tours must still be purchased at the visitor vis-itor center at the regular price. . At 10 a.m at the visitor center, the Junior Ranger Program will continue as scheduled with a special emphasis on the National Park Service and its mission. As well, all books about the National Park Service will be discounted. In remembrance of the early explorers of the caves, and those first explorers of National Parks throughout the United States, Interpretive Park Rangers will give visitors special flashlight tours. Throughout the caves all the lights will be left off so visitors can experience the thrill of discovering dis-covering them as if it were for the very first time. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own flashlights. Finally, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Ranger Royce Shelley will present an evening program pro-gram about the "History of the National Park Service" and why it has become such an important part of national nation-al and international culture. This program offers visitors the opportunity to understand under-stand the purpose for the National Park Service and the events leading to its inception. While the first National Park was established on Mar 1, 1872, the National Park Service wasn't established until Aug. 25, 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson. Under the Department ; of Interior, the National Park Service is now responsible for protecting over 375 National . Parks and Monuments that cover more than 83 million acres in 49 states, the District ' of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. As one of more than eight national parks and monuments monu-ments in Utah, Timpanogos Cave National Monument is the closest to the state capital. capi-tal. With a rich natural and human history that includes rock layers dating back 350 million years to an initial cave discovery story that started with mountain lion tracks in the snow, the caves have been favorites among northern Utahns for over 100 years. Scout Falls highlighted in hike feature Scout Falls is an excellent short destination for those who want to taste the beauty of Mt. Timpanogos Wilderness without an extensive hike to the summit. sum-mit. Scout Falls, the first leg of the Timpooneke Trail, is a magnificent sight early in the season, although later this waterfall is reduced to a dribble. Snow melt from above feeds the falls, making this hike very exciting during the early summer months. Many families enjoy this section sec-tion of the Great Western Trail and make it a tradition to stop at this refreshing point before continuing to the summit of Mt. Timpanogos. ; Detail of this hike can be found on our Web site at www.newutah.com in our Recreation section.
