Show OSCAR ANDERSON RETURNS FROM EUROPEAN MISSION continued from page one during his stay oscar served as district president of tile the mission and reported that although progress in church work in any country is slow still mormonism is gaining a foothold in the scandinavian din avian countries he told of the great popularity of basketball which was introduced there them by mormon missionaries arid and of the good publicity it is bringing the church he also men mentioned menton toned cd a chor us of missionaries known as the american harmony singers who had made a concert tour of the country with great success peace loving people the people of sweden won the heart of oscar whom he said were diligent industrious and lovers of peace because there has been no war in which sweden lias has been involved for over years and because the country is rich in natural resources there is a great amount of prosperity there swedish people are free traders and are very fond of america and americans militarism and war precautions are not very apparent in n sweden oscar said although during the crisis of the last year the government did buy up quantities of coal and food for storage and perfected organizations in large cities so that the populations could be moved within a short time in case of air raids an interesting movement in in sweden is the use of cooperatives in many phases of business there are cooperative grocery stores merc antiles the entire dairy business 1 is operated cooperatively and state medicine is very successfully practiced in sweden where people are guaranteed first class medical attention and hospitalization for about a day after being released from the mission field oscar traveled across europe going first to denmark and then into germany where he visited berlin and munich germany appears to be a very industrious country factories are going in at top speed new roads are U under er construction and everyone is busy noticeable in germany is the anti jewish movement and on many factories and shops are signs which read no jews admitted jewish migration is also very cry apparent on all boats leaving europe there are many jews oscar believes americans are a little hard on germans and italians and sympathizes with those countries because of their c crowded conditions and lack of space and rl re 1 sources I 1 visits lisit rome J oscar visited in venice which he said is old and different from any other city in the world he then went to rome which in spite of many new buildings seemed a city of ancient ruins during his stay in rome there were two holidays to celebrate the return of italian soldiers from spain in one parade was a war tank of flowers representing fascism tru crushing shing beneath it a paper box labeled democracy from rome oscar traveled back northward visiting naples and mt AIL vesuvius pisa and the leaning tower genoa from whence columbus set sail and arrived in paris france here he said he saw more americans and english people than in any other part of his trip after a look at the famous louvre museum versailles and other points of interest in a nd about paris oscar went to le I lavre havre france where he boarded the liner manhattan for america in new york he visited the fair stopped in washington D C went to detroit where he picked up a new car and drove it home for his father he also visited early mormon historic sites in the middle west oscar believes his two and a half years in a foreign mission have done a great deal toward broadening and developing him both mentally arid and spiritually and values very highly his experiences and his opportunity anity to fulfill a mission |
