Roxey Childs Leaves Aggies ' i I Let Us Compare Work and Wages of the Commissioners Commissioners vsXogati County Before considering the above subject permit us to refer to the little Chicago episode where $141,000,000 unpaid taxes still remain .nce thi years and 31. The defaulters gave as their reason for refusing to meet their part of Chicagos upkeep that much intangible property was allowed to escape its proper share of Chicagos upkeep. Accordingly the office holders in Chicago took the matter into Court and the bolters were sustained in their course. Here is the rate of assessment and levy at which objection was made. Real Estate worth say $1,000 was assessed from $600 to $750. This is about the rate that Logan business property is valued for assessment at the present time, but of course higher than the assessment outside of Logan City. The levy in Chicago was 37 mills and the levy in Ogden and Salt Lake City is about the same while the levy in Logan is 45.05 mills so that Logan City is really assessed higher than Chicago. 1927-28-29-- COMMISSIONER ALBIN T. CLAWSON Mr. Clawson took office January 1, 1925. The legal salary was then $1500 per annum. In the fall of 1928 the Commissioners reduced the salary to $1300 to take effect January 1 with the new Commissioners which would include Mr. Cfawson as a hold over. Accordingly there were two years remaining of his term wherein he was legally entitled to $1500 per annum for two years. He however refused to accept more than the $1300 notwithstanding the fact that he was entitled to $400 additional. Let it further be remembered that $1.00 was only worth 100 cents at that time. Mr. Clawson was fully aware of the conditions of the farmers in 1929-3- 0 and at the Republican Convention in the fall of 1930, the south end of the County came in with a unanimous vote in favor of Mr. Clawson for a third term as a reward for his fairness and consideration of the taxpayers. COUNTY COMMISSIONERS VS. LOGAN COMMISSIONERS . The County Commissioners are receiving $1300 per annum including expenses. They meet once a week or 52 meetings per annum, but have many additional meetings. Hence we are willing to add 48 meetings making a total of 100. They handled last year $162,141. Logan Commissioners receive the reduced price of the Mayor $720 per annum. They meet twice a week and have many additional meetings and there is hardly a day passes when they are not found in some part of the town or out of the city attending to the requirements of the city. They handled last year $286,000. Weber County Commissioners receive $2,000 per annum, but they give six full days each week and are on the job the entire time and their salary is accordingly $700 more than the Cache County Commissioners. Provo City Commissioners receive $1500 per annum and the Mayor $1800 less the voluntary cut accepted. Provo is somewhat larger than Logan. Notwithstanding this difference in the salary of the Logan Commissioners and that of Provo, we have never heard complaint from our Commissioners, regardless of $540 and their low sadary compared with that of Provo and they COUNTY SCHOOL voluntarily accepted a cut of 10 per cent in their salary, TRUSTEES. and that same cut went thru all the employees of the At the last session of our State legislature, the measly salary of the County School Trustees throughcity. out the state was cut from $25 per month to $12.50.
