Total contributions for all purpose were $l.9G7.400, or $100,000 more than last year. The board of home missions reported that while tbe work of the past year was highly encouraging, It was more desirous that the church should realize more fully and clearly the magnitude of Ha unfinished work In this country. The net increase in the membership of the miss tons last year was 1.851 and the payments to Presbyteries were $12,-00-0 more than for 19(13. Ths total expenditures were $104,784. YOUNG WOMAN ASJLEUTH A pretty young woman In this city, a descendant of one of the oldest and most prominent families In the state, is making a reputation as a sleuth that is pulling some of tbe men or tbs detective force to shame. She is Alisa Susan 11. Noble, a grandniece of James Noble, who was a United Slates senator from Indiana from 1816 lo 1831. and of Noah Noble, who was governor of the state from 1831 to 1837. Alls Noble's first exploit was to arrest two men on the street and deliver them to the desk sergeant at the police station. She is employed by the Charity Orseveral ganization society, and for months there were complaints about two men who were begging at houses and on the atreeia. The two men appeared In different disguises, sometimes as cripples, sometimes as the turns of wealthy parents who had cast them off, sometimes as unfortunate investors In the west who were trying to get to friends in the east. Mias Noble became satisfied that the two men were working together, and after the police bad failed to bring them tn she started out to find them. Her search was painstaking, and for nearly a week was kept up day and him by th lapel of his coat and demanded that he accompany her in the liollrf Mai inn. The fellow pulled liark, but she tightened her grip upon hta wsf and. menacingly Milled to a big policeman at the corner. "If you don't go." die said. "I'll call tlist policeman and have you taken down In the pairol wagou. : The man kinked at her. and erring determination in her manner walked with her to the poli.-- station and was turned over to Ihe officers aa a vagrant. He refused to give his pal away, but Alia Noble judged that the other man waa not far away at the time of the arrest. This thought came to her from the way the man had looked acrose the street when she first accosted him. Going back on the opposite side of the street she recognized the fellow's partner and arrested him, and In twenty minutea he too was slated at the station hones for vagrancy. A more difficult piece of detective work has just been accomplished by her, though the prisoner escaped at the last moment, through the bungling of men. Samuel Hhodes of 1316 East Nineteenth street deserted his wife and four children. Alin Noble was sent to catch blm. She learned that Rhodes spent much of bis time with a woman wbo kept a boarding bouse, but the woman positively denied any knowledge of hla whereabouts. Within a short time she also disapiicared. and Miss Noble bollcved that she bad gone to Join the absconding husband. She started out to Jurat e the couple, hut it was a munih before she could find even a slight trace of them. A relative ot the woman Inadvertently remarked that the boarding house keeper had gone to AlarUnatrille, and Atlas Noble followed, but no trace of the fugitives could be found. She made several trips to that city and finally tbe postmaster remembered that he had forwarded a letter to the woman at a BRITISH TROOrS IN THIBET ISOLATED.
