Storrs, who has taught math at Cyprus for the past years, was among 167 teachers to be recognized for an extraordinary ability to inspire students to learn by bringing challenging concepts to life in the classroom. She intuitively understands the needs of young adults, said Cyprus High School Principal Paul Sagers. Her unique ability to recognize and seize true learning opportunities is one characteristic that sets her apart from even the best teachers. She has the ability to motivate students to learn and create an atmosphere of respect and trust in her class- with her. She is continually developing programs that will benefit our students, Sagers said. Storrs said that she wants students to feel safe and comfortable with mathematics in her classroom. I want my students to ask questions and not be intimated by mathematics because it is a hard subject, Storrs Said. If my students feel safe, they are willing to take risks and that is when true learning occurs. The award was established by the White House in 1983 as the nations highest Saturday West , honor for elementary and secondary school math and science teachers. For the past 22 years, a teacher in a the Granite School District has won the national award. These honored teachers have the gift to kindle excitement in young people about complex ideas that can be intimidating to young learners, said National Science Foundation Director Dr. Rita Colwell. Educators like these bring contagious enthusiasm into the classroom and weave the essential life skill of critical thinking into the fabric of our rising generations. Storrs received a special citation signed by President Bush, a $7,500 cash award ' from NSF to improve science and mathematics instruction, gifts from donors, and a trip to the March 2 1 Washington D.C. awards presentation. Storrs, who grew up in West Valley City, is a graduate of Orchard Elementary School, Brockbank Junior High and graduated from Cyprus in 1988 as the saluta-toria- 21 . cation and credits many teachers along the way who helped shape her teaching style today. "There are many teachers who had a profound affect on how I view education, Storrs said.
