Utah part aHica at It, IHT at OPPORTUNITIES Youth (starting to high schools and colleges this fall might remember the words of Henry Ford : Greater progress lies ahead in the next 50 years than weve had in the last 1000 years. Young people say there ure no opportunities today. Why, the worlds opportunities are just beginning to. break I You fellows ore going to reduce prices, raise wages, increase production. Thats the task for youth ahead. The time is not distant when there will be more jobs than men to do them, and youth will have better jobs than today. James E. West, chief scout executive, and editor 1 am concerned about the of Boys Life says: pauperizing effect of some of the influences on youth today. We have so much done for us to make life easier by means of various mechanical appliances that I do think our young people are deprived of some of the zest of struggle, the deep satisfaction that comes from overcoming obstacles that we had a generation ago. Our young people have not had to pay the price to enjoy the privileges of citizenship in a democracy. They have had to make no effort, bear no struggle. It is not the fault of the young people alone but of the older people too. We all want others to do what has to be done. We turn the job over to the politicians, the job of running the community unless there is some vital problem affecting us in our homes. Not alone our interest but our knowledge of civic affairs is lax. Tut these two statements together and we have America as it is today. On the one hand the vast reservoir of opportunity, the greatest in the world. On the other hand the great masses of people willing to take what is given but unwilling to exert themselves for better conditions, satisfied to let the politicians run the country, ever demanding more and more for themselves and their own communities and ever increasing their howl against taxes and other assessments which come from too much public giving. Youth can come to the aid of this country today as never before. America needs action, and opportunity alweays reveals itself in action, never in Elbert llubbard said: The actual fact is that in this day Opportunity not only knocks at your door but is playing an anvil chorus on every mans door, and then lays for the owner around the corner with a club. The world is sore in need of men who can do things. And ono more quotation for our own thinking to pause upon as we all march into another winter, after these autumn preliminaries are over: They do me wrong who say I come no more. When once I know and fail to find you in; For every day I stand outside your door And hid you wake, and rise to fight and win. OP i sloth-fulnes- s. I 1 si AGRICOLA Automatically Controlled CIRCULATOR AMERICANS ALL IMMIGRANTS ALL New Never was such a war. Nations fighting each other, and yet the peoples of all nations, including the belligerants, want peace. Britons are not hating the Germans; neither do the German people hate the British. But they are fighting jnst the IN CONTROLS IN PERFORMANCE IN EFFICIENCY IN DESIGN IN SAFETY same. Its a lesson to America. We are at peace, thankfully, except it might be that here at home we are engendering hatreds against each other. We should remember that we are all Americans, and yet we are all immigrants, somewhere back along our ancestral lines. Every American citizen today can trace somewhere a branch of his family who migrated to America. We may be German, Italian, Swiss, Irish, British, French, even Canadian, in our blood stream, bnt today we are all American. That is the lesson. Let no man point at another as being alien, if that other obeys the laws, and respects the rights of others. The only citizens living in this country today are those who foster and agitate hatred against others, or who have not renounced their foreign allegiance, while also claiming American citizenship rights. One other thing however should be added to this statement. It is that regardless of our personal leanings in the present European struggle, the only American way is strict neutrality, refusing to tnko sides, or to play favorites, at least until such time ns by their own acts, the belligerants themselves force us to defend our neutrality.
