Show 1 he American Method. A very good Htory concerning one of our troops at Mnhlln is told by nn English nnvnl offl( or, who was an eye witness to the occurrence. A few days after the American troops had occupied the city I wa3 ashore taking tak-ing a loot: nt the city and American sol" dtora. The city was quite crowded with both American nnd Spanish soldiers. nnd they seemed to be on tho friendliest terms. The Spunish oflkcia were walking walk-ing the streets with their sido arms, ns they bnd been allowed to retain them by the terms of sin render. It would havo been hard to havo told who were in possession of the town had it not been for the American sentinel who were pacing the streets. Just ns I was crossing one of tho numerous bridges over tho Paaig river, I saw a native Filipino spit in the face of a Spanish officer, nud run to the American who was guarding the bridge demanding his protection, i stopped fo see the thing out, as I was very curious to see what tho American soldier would do. It was some time before tho Filipino could make himself understood, and the sentry sen-try took some time to catch on 'to what bad been done, but you can imagine my surprise when he handed his gun to the Spanish oflicer nnd caught the nativo by the nap of the neck nnd tho sent of tho trousers nnd pitched him off the bridge into the Pasig river. Tlun ho calmly took his gun from the Spanish oflicer and hognn pacing his beat as if nothing had happened. I Went on my way thinking tho American soldier may not be as military as his brother of Europe, but ho is made of tho right stufl'. Mobile Register. |
