You remember reading about five Jap ships that tried to land supplies to the Japs who were trapped on Guadalcanal. These ships were so badly damaged that they beached themselves. My Commander, a Chief Machinist, and a 3rd Class Shipfitter, noticed that there was a boom on one of these ships, and we were badly in need of a boom. These men volunteered, heedless of their personal safety, and’ set out under fire to salvage the equipment. Eighty feet out they were caught by an enemy plane and blownto bits. * over all.
