On December 20th and 21st, The Salt Lake City Mime Troupe will present Clowns Cabaret at the Glass Factory. The troupe itself is about two years old and at its inception was more inclined towards the classical Marcel Marceau type iff mime. Now, however, they are interacting in several different medial including singing, dancing, juggling, and even The troupe basically functions as a road show and works within the traditions of European street theatre. It was only last August at the International Mime Festival in La Crosse, Wisconsin, that they gained national recognition and, as a result, will be off to Europe in the spring tor an indefinite period of time. They are truly professionals in an art form that, 'unfortunately, has more or less died in this country. To keep it alive as they are doing is, in itself, an accomplishment and implies a dedication that is obvious in their excellent and tightly conceived performances. fire-eatin- full-leng- th reservations (3595753); bottles, Beer, Mini- Set-up- Moonraker Steak, Seafood, Prime Rib, Open 811 PM Monday-Thursda812 Friday-Saturdamidnight 84-8- 9; y, closed Sunday; Accepts major credit cards & reser-vation- ); Beer, 6-- 8 Mini-bottle- s, Set-up- st The Nutcracker is the magical story of a Christmas Eve in Numburg, Germany, about 1850, when all the toys come to life; and Clara, a little girl, is taken on a journey through fairyland by the young prince who had been imprisoned in the form of the nutcracker until the spell was broken by his victory over the giant mice. Christensen produced the first Nutcracker to be choreographed by an American. This was done during the years in which he created the San Francisco Ballet The history of Christensen and his two brothers, Lew and Harold, is, in itself, an exciting one. Wiliam, an accomplished pianist, formed a Dixieland jazz band after graduating from high school. This proved to be a profitable enterprise after World War I when jazz was so popular. He fell in love with the ballet while watching some students perform in Brigham (Sty and gave up jazz for dancing. The Christensens later went to New York where they studied with Mascaeno and Albertieri, ballet master of the Metropolitan Opera. Later, William worked under Laurent Novikoff and the Bolshoi ballerina, Julietta Mendes. In the 1920's the three young men were billed as The Le Christ Brothers" on the vaudeville stage. Although implored them to give up vaudeville and become true 'dan-seurthey had to eat. Soon, they were performing at the Palace and the Hippodrome and were being booked with such greats as W.C. Fields. Movies eventually killed vaudeville, forcing the Christensens into the world iff serious ballet William took over his deceased uncles school in Portland and eventually famed the Portland Ballet. In the meantime, Lew and Harold had joined The American Ballet the first Balanchine-Kirstei- n company which was resident at the Metropolitan Opera from 193838. It was during this time that Lew created Balanchines American Apollo and also came into his own as a choreographer with Filling Statfaxwthe first American ballet full-leng- th Film My opinions concerning Hollywood and its. own peculiar brand of filmmaking had best be left unsaid, but it does seem to do something for Roman Polanski, the director of one of this years better American films, Chinatown. Like Rosemary'i Baby, Chinatown is more disciplined and involving than his last film What?. The setting is Los Angeles in 1937, presented with incredibly accurate period detail. Fortunately, Polanski never overplays the now fashionable craze fa nostalgia. There is a certain elusiveness maintained in the images which tends to reinforce the disorientation that is the key to the films movement towards its inevitable ending. Jack Nicholson gives his usual fabulous performance as the Chandleresque Jake Gittes, private detective. John Huston proves himself to be as good an actor as he is a director in the role of the arch villain, Noah Cross. Enigmatic and seductive, Faye Dunaway creates the romance and corruption that pervade the film. Polanski, himself, appears in the film only long enough to delicately slit Nicholson's nostril with a knife in what must be considered an allusion to tbe Hitchcockian mystery-thrillconvention within which he is working. Chinatown is at the Century Theatre through the 19th of this ' ' ; month. . er s', Main Street 649-805- 1 Orange-kumqu- EASONS American Delicacies - Steaks, Crab, 83000 Open daily from S p.m. Entertainment. When he finally left that city and came to Salt Lake, he immediately established a ballet department at the University of Utah, the first school of ballet in an American university. Unfortunately, the students had little professional training prior to college and, consequently, were unfit for any sol of professional work. Christensen solved this problem by moving his own private school iff dancers to the University. This was the beginning of a conservatory program which eventually grew Into the Ballet West, now a company with an international reputation for excellence.
