The biggest cross country skiing event in the Games this week was the Utah Marathon, which took place Jan. 20 at Jeremy Ranch. Racers competed in 21-km half marathons and 42-km full marathons. Roxanne Toly and Holly Hunter, both of Park City, were the top two women finishers in the half marathon. Toly finished about five minutes ahead of Hunter. She said she would have skied the full marathon, but "didn't want to go six times around the trail." Hunter, 19, agreed. "I'm glad I didn't go the full distance," she said. "I'd probably be dead right now." Rich Groth finished second in the men in the 21-km race, and first in his (45-49) age group. Park City women swept the first three places in the full marathon. Suzy Clutz, a member of Team Bonne Bell, won the race. "I haven't been skiing very well," Clutz said. "I'm feeling better.. .I'm coming back." The Jan. 20 race was won by Karianne Erikson, an older skier who plans to race for the University of Utah. Erikson won by four seconds over the much younger Circo. Cir-co. "That's the nice thing about skiing ski-ing you've always got somebody to keep you honest," Clifford said. Monica Schenn Thanner of Sun Valley won the Jan. 21 race. Sue Skeen, a snowboard instructor at ParkWest, finished second in the Women's Expert division. Stephanie Cherrinton finished third.
