Bountiful will host an important opening-round game with East at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Leopards are the early favorite in Region, while Bountiful finished a 5 practice slate with a victory over West Jordan Saturday night. In other opening games, Woods Cross visits Viewmont while Highland travels to Davis. The Wildcats of Woods Cross are 7 on the year, 5-- 3-- off to a better start than in 1985-8Viewmont has been the surprise of the season thus far, sporting a record despite a narrow loss to Clearfield last week. And at Highland, Larry Maxwell has his troops ready for action as the Rams prepare for Davis. The inDarts finished preseason at cluding a win over state defending champ Brighton, but lost their latest contest to Bonneville. 6. 9-- two-poi- 1 nt 7-- 3, All games start at 7:30 p.m. A complete preview of Region Four will appear in Thursdays Clipper. Bountiful and Clearfield, two of the fastest starters, wrap up their respective preseasons with a contest this afternoon at 5:30 p.m., at Bountiful. The Braves are 6--3 on the season, having beaten Bonneville and Judge in their last two outings. Bountiful has received solid play from seniors Michelle Behl and Kristen Rose, with Heidi Olsen, Jana Murdock, Kim Johnson and Jenny Dredge also seeing extensive action. Junior Lisa Wilkinson should be back from an in- jury that forced her to sit out sever- al games rrr December. THeFaldon's'have started fast, off to an 0 clip pending the outcome of Mondays contest with Judge. Clearfield starts just one senior, Joy Trussel, and adds to her talents juniors Promise McIntosh, Cathy Kelsey and Amber Poll, plus sophomore Kim Hill. Clearfield already has victories over Hillcrest, Moun8-- ter. Viewmont also has strong in Karen Tinsley and Kati McClurg. The defending state champs from Woods Cross are also off to a good start, owning a 2 mark thus far. The Wildcats only losses have been narrow ones to powerful American favorite Provo. Fork and Junior Amy Mason has been the backups The news is much the same in Region One basketball, it appears as if the Bonneville Lakers are the team to beat again. No one should be surprised at all to see Gary Alversons Lakers atop Region One basketball when another prep basketball season begins to wind down. Of course this gets to be a pretty good topic right now as action in Region One basketball gets underway this Friday for all six schools. Of local interest, Clearfield will be on the road to face a solid Roy team at 7:30 while Box Elder will visit Layton in the Lancers league opener. Most of the coaches in Region One are predicting the Lakers to win it all in Region One, mostly because of some tremendous talent which blends nicely with valuable experience. The Lakers will meet Weber in the first round on Friday night. The Warriors, at one point, may have been even with Lakers. But a serious injury to McGary, a talented Weber guard, definitely gives the Bonneville team the edge now. Without McGary, Weber will still be a good basketball team but probably wont have the horses Bonneville does. McGary was the best player on the Weber team. Roy will also be a contender in Region One, but most feel the Royals arent in the same class as Weber and Bonneville. Coaching wise, you cant get much better than the veteran Ted Smith. But Smith just doesnt have the horses inside like Weber and Bonneville do. Hall and Youngblood give the Lakers plenty of inside power and Koford is a definite plus for Weber inside. Nobody in the league has that kind of inside game and thats what its all about when it comes to high school basketball. But its not to be said that Roy wont end up knocking off Bonneville or Weber at least once. Smith will find a way to keep Miles and Belnap a cookin. Layton might be the darkhorse team of the region, a squad that is loaded with talented jumpers and plenty of quickness. But thus far the team has showed too much inconsistency, winning one night at home against Bountiful in overtime and then losing another night at home against hapless Ogden. But perhaps the Lancers will finally put it together when league starts, at least Stan Buchanan is hoping so. Said one Region One coach, The Lancers are so quick and one night if they are on, it could be doomsday. Clearfield is hoping that they will continue to which play the way they have in has been a good tough brand of basketball. Hopefully that will be good enough to land tournaCraig Hansens group a spot in the ment. This year three teams automatically qualify from Region One for the playoffs while the fourth place team must playoff with another team from another region before an actual berth will be awarded. This year three teams automatically qualify from Region One for the playoffs while the fourth place team must playoff with another team from another region before an actual berth will be awarded. The Falcons played the best team theyve faced all the Viewmont Vikings, and they beat Viewmont in Bountiful. That win ended a nine game winning streak for the Vikings and helped boost Clearfields confidence a ton. Hansen, who has helped lead many a fine basketball team at Clearfield to the state tournament, is hoping this club just plays as well as Weve accomplished they have in exactly what we wanted to do, said Hansen, If we just stay in the games, we hope well have what it takes to get some victories in the close ones. Box Elder is another fairly good team in Region One and will be a tough challenge for anyone in Region One, especially when the game is played in Brigham City. pre-seaso- n, 4-- A pre-seaso- n, pre-seaso- n.
