Show TAMMANY FOR GORMAN Alleged Deal Between Leader Murphy and Maryland Senator. WASHINGTON. March 19. An interesting inter-esting story was put into circulation here today regarding an alleged secret compact said to have been made by Charles F. Murphy, the leader of Tammany Tam-many Hall, and Arthur P. Gorman, last December. By the terms pf the agreement. Murphy Mur-phy was to use all bis influence to secure se-cure the nomination of Gorman for the Presidency, and to this end was to see tnat New YorK delegates went to St. Louis unlnstructed, so that at the psychological psy-chological moment the support of New York could be thrown to the Maryland man. Just how much recent events have served to vitiate this agreement is not known, but there is reason to believe that for the present reverses lately sustained sus-tained by Gorman be would still have the promise of New York votes in the convention. According to well-known and reliable relia-ble politicians of this city Murphy, December De-cember 20 last, had a long interview With Gorman at the latter" s residence. The two came to an understanding, the gist of which is above stated. With this agreement in view, it is easy to understand Murphy's hostility to the Parker boom and the throwing out of hints that he favored the nomination nomi-nation of Cleveland. |
