Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XIV Issue XVII November 15, 2007 Weber State Presents Orchesis Dance Theatre Weber State University Department of Performing Arts presents Orchesis Dance Theatre in their Fall Concert, Thursday through Saturday, November 15, 16, and 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Allred Theater, Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $5.50 for students, seniors, WSU employees, and those with military I.D. All others are $8.50. Tickets can be purchased at the Dee Events Center Ticket Office, by calling 1-800-WSU-TIKS, or at the Browning Center Box Office beginning one hour before the performance. Orchesis Dance Theatre is the modern dance company of Weber State University. This fall concert is directed by Amanda Sowerby and features the choreography of faculty members Sara Christensen and Joanne Lawrence and students Jenny Devlin, Shannon Watson and Michelle Welling. Sara Christensen’s work, “I Like My Town,” shows seven unique people and the pathways of their existence - sometimes comical, nonsensical, dynamic, dramatic, and sometimes all together. Sara is a WSU graduate and has recently received her master’s degree in dance from the University of Utah. Joanne L. Lawrence, WSU Dance Program Director, presents two pieces that are a result of working with new faculty member David Akomba. Originally from Kenya, Akomba brings the culture of the Ewe in a piece called “Gahu” and the Zulu in a dance called “Mbombela.” “Gahu” is a recreational dance performed at social gatherings such as festivals and funerals, where it has become customary to show off jewelry during the performance. “Mbombela” is the Zulu named for a commuter train. This piece is choreographed to imitate the social and economic activities of people taking the train to work and also features wildlife as they run and dance to the deafening noises of the train. Shannon Watson’s dance, “Speed Dial,” is about chance the finding out what happens when things are not planned. As she explains, “When you don’t allow yourself to control the outcome, anything can follow. I tried not to let my personal opinion determine or limit what could happen. These ideas came from Merc Cunningham’s work and my interesting in combining my analytical mind and creative mind.” She is a single mother, returning to school to complete a degree in dance with a minor in mathematics. Michelle Welling has created a dance as a trip to her grandmother, who died this past summer. “88 Keys to the Heart” is a memory of her grandmother and the regret of so many unasked questions. She is using props and activities such as knitting baby blankets and gardening to create the memories. One of her dancers, Josie Patterson says, “It has been an interesting process to create movement based on someone’s life who we don’t know, but who was close to the choreographer.” For more information about the concert contact, Amanda Sowerby, 801-626-7674 or by visiting <asowerby@weber.edu> Snowflakes Begin Dance at Snowbasin Resort Snowbasin Resort is pleased to announce that they are making snow!
