J and she he has his p put t it into practice I With a beautiful home a comfortable comfortable comfortable com com- Income and utterly alone in the world she turned her back backon backon on the comfortable easy life of ofa ofa ofa a society woman and looked about abou t ther her for something useful to do o I Her fondness for children di directed directed dl- dl I I her course and a tour of ot the childrens children's h hospitals suggested to her a plan She planned to do something for convalescent children children children chil chil- dren to bridge bridie the gap between the hospital and the home often a poor and overcrowded home NOT AN INSTITUTION So I l built a n a bun bungalow in m the rear of my home she explains planning It carefully so that it should have all nit the sunlight and andall air all possible It will ac accommodate 20 babies at a time but I rarely take more more than 10 because I 1 want to make a home for them not an Institution I 1 hired a trained nurse and a cook and notified some of the hospitals Hos hos- Hospitals in the crowded sections of ot the New York east side that I would care for the convalescent I gables oa- oa a- a bies bles nurse them back to health and give them a long vacation inthe in inthe inthe the country before they go back to their homes Children need love just as the they need air and sunlight An Institution institution institution Is entirely wrong for their normal growth If women of means In this country would Just give shelter and love to one homeless J baby there wo would id be no no need for orphan asylums or or Institutions MANY APPLICATIONS And the jC joy and satisfaction that comes from helping one needy child develop men and nd spiritually as well vell as physically more than compensates for any sacrifice Involved ol Since Mrs Smith opened her bungalow for convalescents she has had more applications from hospitals and doctors than she I could possibly fill and has often orten been obliged to choose the most needy rather than extend boundless boundless boundless boundless' bound bound- less less' hospitality The number of applications I have rec received ived as well as the number num num- ber her of babies I have been able to put on the road to health convinces convinces con con- vinces me that there i Is a definite n need ed for such work in this country and that other women with sufficient sufficient means and time time could well welI help carry carryon on the work she sa says s. s Mrs Smith believes es there is no reason why any woman should feel alone in the world so ko o long as there are any children who are homeless 0 Children are women's work and their natural responsibility more than any other form of social service service service ser ser- vice she concluded Whether you work worl for your own children or children or for others Is Immaterial when you consider the benefit to posterity Hint Hint to prospective June brides s Dishes Dishes have to be he washed about a thousand times a year A mar man who couldn't budge e a sack of cement can sit with a pound girl irl in his lap tor hours
