SUU alumna FOR THE JOURNAL The Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) .opened a new exhibit Oct. 10 that will run through the month of October, closing on Oct. 31. This exhibit features pieces by Nathan Florence, an artist represented by Modern West Fine Arts. Admission is free to everyone. Many of Florences paintings are painted over a printed fabric or pattern that allows the patterned fabric to shine through or take on Gina Dodge, a art studio major from Henderson, Nevada, currently works at the museum as a curator. She said Florences work is unique because of his choices of fabric and prints and how he uses them. This exhibit is great for the art and design students, because it is creative and unique, Dodge said. One interesting aspect of Florences work is how he lets the fabric show through and utilizes the patterns. Katie Jensen, a senior art education i V CHARLOTTE major from Draper and museum assistant, said she likes that he lets the fabric show through and create shadows in the faces and allows you to see the detail underneath. I like the way he applies the paint; how you can see the layers, texture and patterns in the shading, Jensen said. SUU students arent the only ones taking advantage of this unique exhibit. SUMA has about 50 school kids come tour every Tuesday through Friday, and this week, they were able to see Florences work. A Nikki Lewis, a master of fine arts student from Illinois and education coordinator for SUMA, said the kids love his work. Lewis told them how Florence developed his style. Florence was always afraid that he would run out of paper in his sketch book, so instead, he resorted to drawing on different items like his bedroom door, jeans, shoes or walls. We have to remind the kids that their it s a parents might not like that, but cool concept to them, Lewis said.
