Fifteen minutes before be-fore noon today the union -ooks and waiters employed in the Kennedy cafe and the Kennedy cafeteria were called out on a ytrike by the officials of the union, when Manager Angus Kennedy refused re-fused to sisn a blanket increase of wages for all members of the union employed in his house. Following the wulkout, the employees, who numbered about ten irls and five men, began picketing the two eating places. Members of the police and sheriff's sher-iff's departments were called and dispersed dis-persed the strikers. Representatives of the strikers went to the police station, where they held a conference with Captain O. H. Mohlman, who told them that the city's laws prevent pre-vent picketing of any kind and informed them that congrega ting upon the sidewalk side-walk in front of a place of business would Tiot be permitted. The union representatives representa-tives informed the police that they desired de-sired to adhere strictly to the law. Manager Kennedy said that he advised a committee from "the Council of Labor, composed of H. W. .Beckett, Sr., William Figgott and Organizer LMxon of the Cooks , and Waiters' union, when they called I upon him Wednesday, that while he was operating a union house he did not feel ; able to sign the agreement for tho in- I creased wages at this time. He said that he did not have any intimation of the strike until he saw the girls walking out of the cafe and the rafeteria. He said that he secured aid from the other restaurants of the city and was able to serve dinner. Representatives of the union said this afternoon that the wage increase had not been met and they walked outfc |
