0 RUTTY SPOTS IN A ROADBED uncontrolled water la is cause of ganv dad bad roads drainage Is IB recommended as remedy we have been quite interested lately la in traveling over roads in central iowa at a time when wo we did not expect them to be at all good to find that where they were dragged the going was quite good and where not dragged quito quite rough but even where good there were spots in the roadbed that were rutty now what Is IB the cause of these ruts every mile or two ot at good fairly well dragged roads nothing but water uncontrolled these are places filling up the ruts by dragging does doea not prevent the trouble the drag does not reach the root AH A V nv m good road in colorado of 0 the matter tho the fact Is that just above these places where tho the ruts are there Is a vein ot 0 hard clay coming out gut which the water cannot readily penetrate hence it comes out under the roadbed just as a slough comes out on the side of at a hill bill the remedy for this la is tile drainage and the drain should not bo be located in the place but above it so as aa to intercept the water that makes the seep just juat on the same principle that in draining a slough with many branches and prongs tho the work Is dono done best by tiling around the prongs and into the slough blough below nt at the lowest ot of them instead of in the middle ot of it for whenever water gets into a slough the damage Is done the tha point Is to keep it from getting in A little attention to this together with dragging the road after every rain will give us fairly good cotil roads dirt roads without any hard surfacing tor for nine or ten months in the year of course when these places are drained they must havo have a ditch into which the water can run permit us to repeat once more a statement we have been making ever since wo we made our first address on good roads 30 years ago that water uncontrolled Is the cause ot of bad roads that there are two kinds of water so to speak the under water and the upper water the under water waier Is that which comes in under the roadbed and the upper water what comes on it from above or iowa flows in from tho the sides bides the way to get rid of the first to Is through drainage particularly in these places the way to control the second Is by grading and then dragging to put an enamel on the sur bur face of the road wallaces farmer
