Show INCREASE IN SHEEP SHIPMENTS T figures show one million aulion more head from west than year previous the sheep receipts 1 at seven prominent markets for the eleven months of 1910 ending Nov november emLer as compared to the same period of 1909 are as follows 1910 1909 increase decrease chicago 1 south omaha kansas city st louis denver 48 iga st srjoseph joseph 58 sioux city total 7 net gain shipment from ranges practical all of the increase shown was fn m shipments from the range as at the close of july the total marketing for the year 1910 was about the same as for the corresponding rep period of the previous year omaha being about the only market showing a substantial increase the larger part of the gain in receipts of two million head of markets represents the forced marketing of sheep and lambs brought about by the severe drouth conditions prevailing during the summer over the entire west from the gulf of mexico to the canadian border the materially diminished supply of feed in sight for the winter season was an outlook mot discouraging to the sheep man and in insufficient feed during luring the summer season caused many thousands of sheep and lambs to go to market unfit to meet killing demand so that a largely increased percentage over previous pt evious 3 ears had to seek an outlet through the demand of the corn belt feeders edera fe although the packers purchases showed a notable increase over 1909 which was wa one of the best bears ears in the disposition ot the range offerings at the markets mentioned it is d that from three to three and one half balf millions of sheep and I 1 lambs went ent to tanners farmers and feeders fhe the largest gains omaha showed the largest gain in sheep receipts of any of the markets amounting to nearly eight hundred and fifty thousand head more than forthe for the same period of 1909 which was a record year or a total for thai that market of three million head of th number omaha sold for shipment to country feeders one million seven hundred thousand head which is nearly half of the feeder shipments of the seven markets combined and almost equal to the total shipments of any two of the markets mentioned notwithstanding the heavy receipts at omaha throughout the entire range season which at times taxed to the utmost market markt facilities which in former years have been considered ample nearly 10 pr p r cent of the receipts actually sold at omaha showing that there was appah apparently antly an unlimited outlet there for the range stuff this was due to the fact that the outlet there for feed kinds of sheep and lambs has been developing very rapidly in recent years by reason of experiments of small farmers in sheep feeding eding ff which hav ha e resulted profitable for them as a rule advantage to farmers the farmer has found that he lie can with ith a load or two of sheep clean up the roughage about hia his place in his corn fields and stubbles stubble 4 which aich w uld otherwise RO go to was waske e entirely this wast converted into mutton will unil rive give hin him a groht in most cr es abide from benefits derived through the increased fertilization of the soil thue thus it hae has come about that the farmer and emall feeder the man ho can handle one or two care cars very little expense hae has i displaced the big feeder of a few years aeo ago it ie is a fact that hail it not been for the demand the this fall from the corn belt bolt farmer exceeding largely that of previous yean years the marketing of the range stuff would beve bave vaulted eri eti roly ovAy indeed for the ohp hp men M of Q the west yards to be improved while it is ii not likely that the mar of sheep next 3 a car will anywhere near approach the volume of business that moved this year the friends of the omaha market welcome the announcement of extensive improvement and additions which arc are now actually being made at omaha fur the accommodation of its rapidly growing sheep market about sixty thousand dollars will be expended during the latter part of 1910 and the early months of 1911 in arranging rearranging re the big heep beep barn there and providing such additional pen room and facilities as will enable the market to care for about thirty thousand sheep more than heretofore it is the intention to provide before next fall accommodations for about eighty thousand thou sheep |
